At Long Last
In the past Prince Charles has visited Saltburn,Princess Diana has visited South Bank.Prince Philip has visited Wilton, Seal Sands and Lackenby works of BSC.Tony Blair opened a new school in Redcar but we have never had a Queen visit Redcar until today 12 July 2004.
No not Her Majesty but the magnificent Queen Mary 11 ocean liner. The day was dull, overcast and quite chilly and hundreds made their way to the South Gare to watch the liner pass. Each were equipped with binoculars or cameras, watching as she glided past between 5.00pm and 6.00pm. A day to remember.

Always a Welcome on the Tees
The 2005 Tall Ships Race, starts from Newcastle on Wednesday 27th July. This is an annual event, where Cities bordering rivers across Europe compete with each other, to stage this prestigious race.
Up to one hundred and four ships are competing this time, crewed by all Nationalities. Some use these ships, as training in seamanship for young people, fourteen to eighteen.Teesside was privileged, to welcome two Tall Ships on a courtesy visit, enroute to Newcastle. The Mir, pictured below and the Mircea, glided majestically up the river, alas at an early hour, having sailed from Cherbourg.Hartlepool and Whitby also played host, to a number of ships. The Mir, which was open to the public,at Middlesbrough Dock, set sail for Newcastle at 5.30pm, on Saturday 23rd July.Waiting her arrival at South Gare, were hundreds of people, camera's poised. She made the wait worthwhile, as she glided past and we wish her God speed and every good wish in the race. There was plenty of activity on the River, with the daily sailings of container ships keeping the cameramen and women occupied. The Tees pilot was kept very busy, in his little cutter, scurrying back and forth.
