A Trip to Rome

In 1933 unemployment on Teesside was almost total, due to the after effects of the General Strike and a grinding recession. The Catholic Newspaper the Universe, organised a pilgrimage to Rome and I am still researching, how this was funded. My father Tommy Fleming(Bunty), was part of this. He lived in Grangetown at the time and worked at Bolkow and Vaughan, later Dorman Long.He was unemployed at the time and went on to complete fifty years with the Company. Amongst the family heirlooms, are momentoes of this pilgrimage.I have a photograph from this trip(reproduced below) and I have lost count the number of times, when I was young, counting the number of men in the photo, but I gave up and all the family, doing the same, came up with different answers anyway. I have reproduced it to show the whole crowd and then picked out the section, where my father is.You may have relatives on this photo.
It measures 19" by 8" and is mounted in a glass frame.

Closeup

My father Tommy is pictured fourth from the right on the back row.He would be 28yrs old then.

Medal

A medal was presented (below) to commemorate this pilgrimage.

Reverse Side

The reverse side tells us the pilgrimage was organised by the Universe in September 1933 and the medal was presented by Sir Martin J Melvin. It is also supplied with a Papal ribbon and clasp.

Lapel Badge

A lapel badge tells us Tommy stayed at the Divn Salvatoria in Santa Maria

Boat Ticket

The boat ticket tells us the pilgrimage set out from Folkstone to Boulogne but how they travelled from Teesside is still a mystery
