A New Era

On Friday 13th May 2005 a large group of guests including Clergy,Governors, including the Deputy Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Council,Bishop John, school children and Teachers were welcomed in the Sacred Heart School Hall by Headmaster Mr Kevin Mitchell for the ceremony of cutting the first turf on the new schools of the Sacred Heart Comprehensive and St Benedicts Primary and Junior Schools on one Campus off Mersey Rd.He outlined the progress so far and thanked individuals for their contribution in bringing everything together. He also welcomed Bishop John and invited everyone to accompany him to the new building site.

A Little Playlet

The school children in turn read a little playlet entitled The House Builder-

There was once a very rich man who decided to build a big house. He called his son to him one day and asked him to go out and recruit the best team of architects, bricklayers, carpenters, plumbers and decorators he could find. After a long search the son put together a team of workers and invited them to a meeting to discuss the task.As they sat around the table, an argument broke out as to whose work was most important.

I'm the most important person here-said the architect.

Without me there would be no plan to work to.

Nonsense-said the bricklayer.
You can't live in a plan. I'm the most important person.Without me there would be no house.

Thats all very well- said the carpenter-

But a house without beams, rafters, doors and windows would be a sorry sight indeed now would'nt it?. Youve got to admit that I'm the most important person here.

Rubbish -shouted the plumber-

What civilised person,in the present day would want to live in a house without running water?I must be the most important person.

How wrong you all are -sighed the decorator-

I'm the one who makes a house a home, with my beautiful colour schemes and tasteful finishing.I'm the most important person of all.

Silence- Shouted the son, who had listened in amazement to the argument.

Pause for a moment and let each one of you try to picture a house with only your work in it.

They did as he said and had to admit shamefacedly that he was right. In order to have a good house that can be called a home, everyones contribution was equally important. They stood up,shook hands and went out and got on with their tasks

Update February 2006-Sacred Heart

On the 7th February I had the good fortune to tour the new Sacred Heart School who, with the School Governor's, were shown round by Mr Kevin Mitchell,Mrs Pat Hibbert, Acting Head of Sacred Heart and Site Manager from Mowlem PLC the contractors. The School which is due for completion in October has a somewhat futuristic feel to it's design. It's true to say that when complete it will be all 'ship shape' if you will pardon the pun because it certainly has a nautical theme complete with funnels, these are designed to allow extra natural light into the corridor's.The main entrance is shaped like the stern of a ship. The main Hall can seat 200 students and it also boasts a separate dinning area.Throughout the school the nautical theme continues with porthole shaped windows at various points.

The Main Entrance

Here we see the main entrance leading to the Hub

The Nautical theme is captured with these porthole type windows.

The Sports Hall

Mr Mitchell explains that wallbars which were a main feature of schools sports halls in the past have been omitted in the design of this sports hall so team games can be encouraged. The area is very impressive.A weight training area is being looked at for the future.

St Benedicts School Update 28th February 2006

On Tuesday 28th February I accompanied a group of Governors, including Fr Noonan fron the Sacred Heart, led by the Headmistress,Miss Garvey and the Site Manager for builders Mowlem, around the interior of St Benedict's School. The exterior has colour coaded entrances for different years and this is reflected in the classrooms where the same colour is on one wall. The entrance lobby is spacious but compact, with reception window to the right, leading to the reception area. The classrooms are bright and spacious leading off a central corridor. Each classroom is interlinked by a small corridor where staff toilets are situated.

ST BENEDICTS OPENS

St Benedict's School opened it's doors for the first intake of pupils on Monday 24th April 2006.A red letter day for Catholic education in Redcar.St Albans Parish would like to wish Miss Garvey, all Teachers, aux Staff and pupils the very best in the coming years.

SACRED HEART OPENS 1st NOVEMBER 2006

The first intake of pupils to the brand new Sacred Heart School on Mersey Rd. took place on the 1st November 2006.Having followed the building of the school, from the first cutting of the turf, by Bishop John, to the finish today,I have witnessed the tremendous effort put in by the builders, over many months and yes the chaos that has been caused on Mersey Rd but we can be proud that this school, alongside St Benedicts, is now up and running. This can also serve as a social centre for all our Churches in the Deanery, such being the high technology incorporated in the building.May I on behalf of St Albans Parish, wish Mr Kevin Mitchell, Mrs Pat Hibbert, her pupils, all her teaching staff, auxiliary staff, Governors, cleaning staff, kitchen staff and Mersey Rd. Crossing Supervisors (it was never easy)all the very best for the future.

Classroom

A typical classroom, spacious and with all the modern facilities including state of the art video interactive system.

Dining Area

Pupils can enjoy their meals in this spacious dining area on the ground floor.Photo taken from the upper balcony.

Main Hall

This is equipped with stage facilities to produce substantial theatrical productions with seating for a large audience. The ceiling is quite high so lending itself to better acoustics.Once again video is available.

Inside St Benedicts

After nearly twelve months the school is proving to be a very friendly place, with the pupils being very couteous and enjoying their school time, in a brand new school.Having seen this at first hand one can only thank the Head,Miss Garvay and her staff for their dedication and ability to allow the cildren to express themselves which is a far cry from my schooldays.

School Gym

The children go through their paces during an afterschool session in the gym.

Library

In films and TV sketches it was always pointed out that the Library was a place of study and quietness was the rule.In St Benedicts the Library is situated amidst the hustle and bustle of a busy school which seems to work fine.It is spacious and very much open plan.

Classroom 2

Where are the inkwells and blackboard?

Classroom 3

The walls are covered with the children's work of painting and drawing.

Classroom 4

Computers are very much in evidence in this photo.

Classroom 5

Catholic education is shown here in the Crucifix on the wall.Once again the room is colourful and cheerful.

Corridor Collage

The children have put a great deal of effort in this very colourful collage in the main corridor
