Exciting Changes
 | Many of our Parishioners have relatives and friends buried in Redcar Cemetery on Redcar Lane.If they don't they will just drive past as they get on with their busy lives.I was one of these people and only attended graveside Services for close friends over the years.
That was until members of my family died including a young brother-in-law who was eighteen, and my mother and father-in-law,then my wife Margaret tragically died.It was then the Cemetery took on a new meaning and became a focal point.
There was a mountain of floral tributes to admire,a memorial stone to order and see erected.Relatives from afar came to visit and soon this became a daily visit.
It was during one of these visits comments were made as to the poor condition of the paths and general rundown state of the Cemetery.Fences were in a delapidated condition, the four buildings were derelict and vandalised.
I made an appointment with the Cemetery Manager and we did a tour of the Cemetery and he agreed with everything I pointed out but made the point that they did not have a separate budget and had to appeal to the general budget, which was being squeezed by pressure from everyone else's demands,so leaving nothing for the Cemetery.
I made an appointment with our local Councillor and he agreed to organise a walkabout with all interested parties. This proved very successful and two members of the Council Cabinet were part of the party. The way forward they suggested was to start a group from members of the public so as to secure funds from outside sources, which would go a long way to addressing our problems.
So 'Friends of Redcar Cemetery' was formed after adverts and publicity, including a Radio Interview and an article in the Evening Gazette. The Radio Interview was arranged by Mark Turnbull of Radio Cleveland, for which we are very grateful.
The first meeting was held in St Peters Church meeting rooms,Redcar Lane on the 15th September 2004,when sixteen people attended and we are very grateful to the Rev, Canon John Weetman, Vicar of St Peters, who offered the room but we have stressed this is not a religious group and we have been meeting there ever since.Maureen Redfearn was seconded from Redcar&Cleveland Council as Regeneration Officer, to help us to form a properly constituted Group and her help and organisational skills have been fantastic,we could not have done it without her.
Public Meeting
We held a Public Meeting on 7th April 2005 in Zetland Methodist Church Hall which Councillor Bob Stanway (Cabinet Member for Environment) chaired which was a success and from that we have thirteen members on our Committee and quite a few on our mailing list.I outlined the reasons the Group was set up. Mrs Vera Robinson MBE, a very well known local Historian, gave a talk on the History of the Cemetery, stating it was first opened in 1870 and was asked to be our first President.
Other Officials elected were-
Chair- Ged Fleming.
Secretery -Margaret Noble.
Treasurer-Dorothy Ahmed.
We have also got the support of Redcar Racecourse Company and Borough Park Bowling Club,so together we can make a difference to the whole area.
The Arch which forms the main entrance (pictured above) is in need of a major overhaul and new gates are required.Funding has been allocated from 'Groundwork' (A Government Agency with responsibility for the Environment) with Redcar&Cleveland Council meeting any shortfall for new gates, which should be erected shortly. The stonework is also in need of cleaning. |
|
New Road
One of the reasons the Group was set up was the dangerous and uneven condition of the main road through the old Cemetery which was made up of flagstones. The four buildings within the Cemetery were put up for sale to convert into private housing and we were assured part of the proceeds would be spent on the infrastructure of the Cemetery, namely the road. This has now been complete with a properly constructed Tarmac road which everyone is very pleased about and it is hoped an official opening can take place in the near future to highlight the progress being made. |

Our next venture is a Tombola in Morrisons, Redcar on Thursday 1st December 2005.
Update- £150 was raised at our Tombola. We are grateful to the Management of Morrisons and to all who contributed.
A Tombola will be held in Redcar Central Library on Monday 19th December 2005 from 10.00am.
A small group will visit Marske Engineering on Wednesday at 11.00am to see the building of the gates in progress. |
Old Gate
 | | This photo shows the old gate which was part of a set,the other being damaged by a lorry colliding with the post. The gates were erected in 1874 and it is hoped these can be preserved in Kirkleatham Museum. |
|
New Gates
 | | On the 17th February 2006 a milestone was reached when new gates were erected at the main entrance to Redcar Cemetery. These form part of a major refurbishment programme and I am sure visitors and residents will be pleased with progress. The committee of 'Friends of Redcar Cemetery'would like to thank Marske Engineering,Redcar&Cleveland Borough Council and all our supporters for their help in this project. |
|
Bird Boxes
| It has been decided to erect six bird boxes in the old cemetery.Three were made and donated by Redcar Scout Group (thanks to Joan Buckley). These will be for general use and are now erected.Another three are being supplied by the Wildlife Trust and are for the blue tit family and will be erected shortly. Thanks to Redcar&Cleveland Borough Council lads and the aborist for his assistance. | |
|
Shrub Planting
 | | Shrub planting of the roundabout in the new section of the Cemetery will take place on the Friday 10th March at 10.00am involving children from Zetland Primary School and Alderman Batty School. |
|
Mud Mud Glorious Mud
The children of both Zetland and Alderman Batty schools enjoyed planting shrubs on the roundabout.Unfortunately the weather was very poor. The group would like to thank pupils and staff from both schools.Sorry mums for the mud. |
Our MP's Visit
Mrs Vera Baird QC.MP, Member of Parliament for Redcar, kindly accepted our invitation to visit the cemetery and see the improvements that had been made, since the 'Friends Group' was formed. She spent ninety minutes touring the old cemetery and took a keen interest in what we are trying to achieve. We were blessed with fine weather and the visit, which included four ward Councillors, was very much appreciated by the group and was very informal but a lot of questions were asked. The owners of the Chapel,Mick and his wife, (which has been rebuilt inside) showed the party round their beautiful home.Everyone was amazed at the transformation.
The party then toured the old cemetery at a leisurely pace and the condition of the main thoroughfare was discussed. This consists of flagstones which are in a very poor condition and need replacing with tarmac.Mrs Baird showed a great deal of interest in the memorial stones, some of which are in a sorry state, which hopefully we will address in the near future.
One memorial stone was of particular interest and this was the Boer War Memorial paid for by public subscription in the early part of the last century. This has been damaged and it is hoped this will be repaired by the War Commission.
The party then moved onto the other chapel and it was here we could see what was required to refurbish the inside.A beautiful oak screen is still built inside and it is hoped this can be retained.
Our next port of call was to the Lodge and old mortuary which are both undergoing major refurbishment by the owners who, with the lads carrying out the work were introduced to Vera before a tour of both buildings.
The next stop was to admire the new gates which we are very proud of but still more work is evident on the side gate, the arch and side window.
To cap a very enjoyable visit a group photo was quickly organised. |

Update June 2006
The Group goes from strength to strength which from my point of view as chairman is very pleasing.
We feel very fortunate that we have the Lord Zetland as our Patron after he kindly accepted our invitation and he will be visiting our group on 16th August.
We held a very successful Tombola in Morrisons recently where £218 was raised. Thanks to all who contributed
If you take a walk down the main road leading to the Redcar Racecourse carpark on Redcar Lane you will see the new fencing that has been erected. This in the future will replace the old wicket fencing around the whole cemetery. We wish to thank the Councillors who have contributed out of their ward allowances and the Prison Service who made the fence and the Community workers who erected it.
There are many more projects in the pipeline, why not join?making the cemetery a pleasure to visit is our aim.
Our AGM takes place on 18th July in the Zetland Rooms, St Peters Church,Redcar Lane at 6.15pm.
A display is currently taking place in Redcar Central Library till the 1st July then hopefully will move to the Kirkleatham Museum. In August we hope to have the display in Marske Library. If you do visit we would welcome your comments in the box provided. |

Sheer Madness
In the past few weeks we have experienced vandalism in the cemetery thet beggars belief, when a person or persons unknown entered the cemetery armed with a saw and sawed through a tree trunk leaving the tree scattered about. We have also seen young trees uprooted so causing them to die.The Police and Community Wardens are keeping watch but it is up to all concerned to stop this wanten distruction from taking place. |
AGM
We held our AGM in the Zetland Rooms of St Peters Church on Tuesday 18th July 2006.This was very well attended and was chaired by Councillor Bob Stanway (Cabinet Member for the Environment). After introductions I as group chairman was asked to outline the progress made since we stated.I stated that I was amazed at the rapid progress the group has managed to achieve mainly due to the enthusiasm of the committee and the help we have received from Councillors and Council Officers.Mrs Vera Robinson MBE our President thanked the committee for their efforts over the past year. The financial statement was addressed by our treasurer Dorothy Ahmed and showed a healthy surplus after expences. Our Vice Chairman Mike Walsh then thanked members for their contribution and invited newcomers to join our committee.Mrs Vera Robinson MBE was then asked to talk about the history of the cemetery and the lives of some of the people buried there, which was very interesting.Councillor Stanway thanked everyone and closed the meeting afterwhich refreshments were served. The display which had been featured in Redcar Central Library was on show before being transferred to Kirkleatham Museum from 24th July till 11th September afterwhich it will be in Marske Library. |
New Patron
The 'Friends of Redcar Cemetery' are proud to announce that Lord Zetland has agreed to be Patron of our group. His ancestors provided the land and also contributed financially to establish the cemetery in 1871.He will be visiting the cemetery and will be a guest at our meeting on Wednesday 16th August. |

Lord Zetland's Visit
On Wednesday afternoon 16th August four of our committee met with Lord Zetland in Redcar Cemetery and our first point of call was to the beautiful converted chapel of Mick and his family within the cemetery. Our party then strolled around the whole of the cemetery where problems and improvements were pointed out.We were then invited to the home of our President Vera Robinson MBE where tea and sandwiches where provided.
Our monthly meeting was then held in the Zetland Rooms of St Peters Church where Lord Zetland took an active part after being introduced to our committee. It was a very lively meeting where tea and refreshments were again served.Mr Van Leikerk, who is the Manager of the Community Wardens then addressed the meeting, stating that regular patrols of the cemetery area, were addressing the problem of drinking gangs in the cemetery, something which the cemetery group were becoming very concerned about. The committee would like to thank Lord Zetland for agreeing to be our Patron and making his visit to us, so informal and successful. |

On the 30th September eight members of our committee took part in a collection at Redcar Racecourse. We surpassed last years collection and raised £663 which was fantastic and I as Chairman can only thank everyone who took part and Neil Etherington and his staff at the Racecourse for once again showing us such hospitality on the day.Another event which had been rearranged was a table top sale in the Memorial Hall so our committee had members there at the same time, so £35 was raised at this event making a grand total of £698 on the day.You can be assured that this money will be put to good use (have you noticed the new fencing). Our next fundraising event will be a Tombola in Morrisons sometime in December. Our third newsletter will be available in November. |

Damaged Seat.
A good friend of mine who is 86 years old and who's wife of 56 years died three year ago wanted to commemorate his wife's life by providing a bench for the cemetery. It just so happened he had a bench in his back garden where his wife liked to sit in the summer.I arranged for this bench to be brought to the cemetery and fixed in position at a cost of £100.A suitable plaque was fixed to the back.It has been in position about two years then the yobs decided to take running jumps onto it and trying to dislodge it so smashing one side. These drunken morons or was it kids, need to be stopped and parents need to get a grip.We will be taking steps to try and stamp out this wanten distruction. |
Baby Memorial
 | In a small corner tucked away at the back of the old cemetery the Friends Group, while trailing the ledgers found approx 150 babies were buried in unmarked communal graves from 1937-1970.The group after visiting other cemeteries and seeking advice decided to erect a memorial stone with a suitable plaque. We trawled the Internet and found Eskdale Stone Ltd of Whitby. There just happened to be a sandstone block that someone had ordered then changed their mind which was ideal for us.We then had to think about a plaque and again the Internet came in handy. We found England Signs in Worcester and surprisingly their surname was England. We ordered a 15'' dia plaque in slate and we had a hand in the design.Eskdale Stone fitted the plaque. The lads from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council brought the stone and plaque from Whitby and set it in the ground.
A Memorial Service was arranged and because it such a terrible day weather wise a gazibo was erected.Fifty people attended and after I welcomed everyone the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Coun Wendy Wall, unveiled the stone which had been covered in a cloth depicting Whinny the Poo which was made by our treasurer Dot Ahmed which everyone thought was apropriate. The Rev Canon John Weetman then led us in prayer and hymns were sung with great gusto. He then blessed the stone.Visitors were then invited to Redcar Racecourse where refreshments were served.A total of thirty three pound was donated on the day with a lady donating £100 in a letter to the committee. |
|
Record Collection
The group held a tin collection on the Racecourse and raised £693 which is not only a record for us as far as they know it is a record for Redcar Racecourse. Our thanks goes to Lord Zetland (Chairman),Neil Etherington (Chief Executive)and Sarah Bunting (Events Organiser) of Redcar Racecourse Co and a special thankyou to our collectors. These are Norman 94,Vera 93,Joyce 85,Keith 81,Mick 80 and Gina 83.and us youngens but the figures above are true which makes our group more remarkable. |
WE WON
| The group were very pleased and excited to have won a major local award. This was the coveted 'Making a Difference' award sponsored by the Northern Echo,One North East and the Durham Wildlife Trust. The award ceremony took place in St Peters Church meeting rooms in Redcar Lane where approx 80 people saw David Bellamy the well known botanist and TV personality presented a large shield (pictured below) to myself as chairman together with £500 which will be used to replant two roundabouts in the middle section. After the formalities refreshments were served by the ladies from St Peters Church to whom we are very grateful.Plenty of photo's were taken and a small selection are shown below. | |

 | | Bishop Terence Drainey kindly agreed to visit the Baby Memorial in Redcar Cemetery.Full story on Bishop Terry in the left hand column. |
|
Surprise Visitor
 | | An unusual visitor in the shape of this fawn was spotted in the cemetery recently and stayed three days.Where it came from nobody knows and where it went to is another mystery as everyone was contacted from the RSPCA to the Police and Wildlife experts but nobody seemed interested. The cemetery Friends Group kept an eye on it and called it Frankie but had NO IDEA WHERE IT WENT (OHHHHHHHH Sorry I could not resist that pun) |
|
Half Moon-New Look
 | | The Half Moon in the centre section has had a complete makeover at a total cost of £3,400.This was felt necessary because of private cars parking on this area and making ruts during bad weather and looked unsightly. We tried planting crocuses but we were unsuccessful in stopping cars parking. This also provided an opportunity to dedicate this memorial garden to those who have been lost st sea from Redcar and the surrounding area. The photo above shows the half moon brefore it's transformation |
|
Memorial Garden
 | | The total cost of the work was £3400 to establish the block paving and rail, plant up and supply the stone. This consisted of a grant of £1500 from Groundwork South Tees and the rest was raised by the group through the generosity of the Redcar people in raffles tombola's and collections etc for which the group are very grateful |
|
Suitable Plaque
 | | The group decided they wanted to dedicate the area as a lasting memorial. They decided to dedicate the garden to all those who have lost their lives at sea from Redcar civilian as well as Navy.We then required a suitable plaque to be designed. After a great deal of thought the one above was chosen in half inch slate nine inch by fourteen inch with gold lettering. This was made at England Signs of Worcester. |
|
Planting
 | | The maintenance group were awarded £50 by CVS sponsored by Morrisons to plant flowers and shrubs in the cemetery. They decided to concentrate on the baby memorial where a variety of flowers were planted.Symmonds Nursery of Marske also donated compost. Here we see from left Robert,Margaret,Eric,Dot,Sheelagh and Lucy pose for the group photo wearing their CVS tabards. |
|
At Long Last
 | | In 1954 the then Redcar Borough Council wanted to expand the cemetery. The road which is now known as Thwaites Lane required updating and allotments needed to e taken over, some of which were owned by Redcar Racecourse Co.After talks with the then Managing Director Major Petch agreement was reached and Thwaites Lane was provided with drainage and a new section of the cemetery was set out.Unfortunately no lighting on the whole stretch was provided. After many years of requesting this situation to be addressed, by various elected bodies, nothing was resolved because the question of whether it was an adopted road or not, was always a get out so as not to spend money on it.Now at long last after fifty four years, we finally have five lights along this road. Thanks to the Councillors and lobyists including the Friends of Redcar Cemetery this road is now lit. |
|
Memorial Plaque Fitted
 | | Stonemason Mr Mike Weatherall from Danby fitted the plaque to the stone and cleaned the stone. The Friends group are very grateful to the many people who have contributed to this refurbishment. It is hoped a start on a mirror image on the other side can be made shortly. |

Racecourse Collection
The day started windy, cold and rainy and unfortunately this was how it was to stay all day as nine members of the cemetery group assembled outside the Racecourse to start our annual collection. At the end of the day, bedraggled, tired and cold we set off home having thanked our hosts Lord Zetland our Patron and Chairman of the Racecourse ,Neil Etherington,Chief Executive and Sarah Bunting,Events Manager for their hospitality. Our mood changed somewhat when we realised we had collected over £600.Thanks to all who collected on such a poor day |
Farewell
The news that Chief Executive,Neil Etherington and Event Manager Sarah Bunting are leaving Redcar Racecourse brings sincere regret from the 'Friends of Redcar Cemetery'.These two charismatic people will be greatly missed and we will remember always the camaraderie and fun we had when visiting the racecourse. The help they gave to our small group was greatly appreciated and all we can do is thank them and wish them all the very best for the future |

New Half Moon
Funding has been allocated to reestablish the half moon in the centre section of the cemetery which unfortunately was taken out a number of years ago to allow the mowers easier access. We intend to dedicate this area to all those buried in the cemetery who have dedicated their lives saving others from the sea and cliffs around our coast. All rescue services will be honoured in a special plaque.Work should start in the near future. You will be kept uptodate with the progress.A memorial service for both half moons will be arranged in the Spring. |
