Near and Far
 | | The Internet allows you to e-mail brilliant photo's to family and friends anywhere in the world with the click of a button. We are also lucky to be able to receive them,so I thought you may be interested in the celebrations at Midnight on the 31st in Dubai. The fireworks were around the seven star Burj Hotel complex and were taken by my eldest son Dominic who still likes to jog around Redcar town and beach when he is home.He just wishes lemon tops were sold in Dubai. |

Freedom of the Borough
 | | The Yorkshire Regiment formally known as the Green Howards were granted the 'Freedom of the Borough' of Redcar. This is an ancient custom which is mainly symbolic but allows the bearer to graze sheep in the Highstreet. What it does show is the appreciation the town and indeed Redcar and Cleveland bestow on the courageous men and women who fight on our behalf to try and curb terrorism and also the deadly drugs trade in Afghanistan where these troops have been based for the last six months. One glaring fault with the arrangements this afternoon was the total lack of crowd control in the Highstreet. The young. both male and female showed very little respect for the band or troops.People running between the marching troops was a total discrace and it seemed as though the troops had to march through a melly of disinterested people. One emotional part was when the troops marched past where I was filming, an old soldier could not contain himself in expressing his thanks to the passing troops, his voice becoming more hoarse by the minute which was very emotional. The ladies both young and old had a great time swooning over the hulks passing by,altogether a very emotional day.Good Luck to these troops in the future. |
|
In Fatigues
 | | The marching soldiers were resplendent in their battle fatigues, an estimated five hundred troops took part in the parade, one which Redcar can be justifyingly proud. The salute was taken on the Esplanade by the Mayor of Redcar & Cleveland Coun Mike Findley. He welcomed the troops and wished them a enjoyable stay. After the marchpast the troops, civic dignitaries and fellow 'Freedom' recipients Vera Robinson MBE and Norman Evans MBE enjoyed a pie and pea tea in the Coatham Bowl. |

I have just taken a holiday in the
Highlands of Scotland in a strangely named hamlet of Spittal of Glenshee,a popular ski resort in the Winter and a beautifully tranquil spot in the Summer. |

Scotland and Ireland
 | | In both Scotland and Ireland a story has been told, which surprisingly, is the same one where Queen Victoria's Ladies- in- Waiting took a buggy trip out one fine afternoon to the beautiful 'Ring of Kerry' in Killarney, Southern Ireland, when they came across a spectacular view down the valley. They could not wait to tell the Queen, who ventured to the top to look down on this view and said "We shall call this vantage point 'Ladies View'.This is where the three lakes of Killarney the Upper Lake, the Middle Lake and the Lower Lake, can be seen together stretching out down below. |
|
Scotland's Turn
 | | As mentioned previously the same story is told in Scotland where Queen Victoria was staying at Balmoral. Her Ladies-in-Waiting took a buggy trip around the area and came across a beautiful scene which showed the vast Loch Tummel sretched out far below. They once again could not wait to tell Queen Victoria who on seeing the view decided it would be called 'Queen's View' |

Yellow Polka Dot Bikini and More
 | Over three hundred brave lasses stripped down to bikinis in an attempt to break the world record for the number of bikini clad girls to be together on a beach at any one time. The record was set on Bondi Beach in Australia and stands at 1,100.Australia has a far more agreable climate than a cold albeit summer day on the beach at Redcar.Never the less these girls having paid five pound each to enter did us and the Great North Air Ambulance Service (to which all monies collected goes) proud.Only a week before the Air Ambulance landed in Redcar to ferry an injured motorcyclist to Hospital.
The event was organised by Middlesbrough Lions Club and officially addressed by the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council Coun Mike Findley.Lets hope this is an annual event and more join in next year. |

Lest We Forget
 | | On Sunday 9th November 2008 at 10.20 an amazing array of old veterans, middle aged and young people came together on a bitterly cold and windy day to muster for a parade to honour the many thousand who have been lost in battle since the 1914-18 war (the war to end all wars). The parade was headed by a mounted Policeman followed by the Cleveland Police Band resplendent in their black tunics. These were followed by the flag bearers of the Royal British Legion, many sporting their many campaign medals.Next came the veterans who again were sporting their proudly won campaign medals. The Fire Brigade,Lifeboatmen,Navy,Air Force and Army Cadets followed, their young faces shone against the older generation, who had witnessed battle at first hand but the older ones were immensely proud, as they marched along.A Service of Remembrance was attended by a large crowd. The Rev Canon John Weetman from St Peters in the town led the service and the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Coun Mike Findley read the lesson. Many organisations in the town were invited to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph after a minute's silence was observed. The Mayor took the salute at a march past later. Many who marched were in their late eighties but were remarkably sprightly. |

The British Legion
 | The flag bearers were led by parade organiser Eric Houden who did a fine job.
