What is your street or road or avenue named after.>

In Redcar there are some strange names given to streets and if you live at an address in that road for many years the chances are that you will have written your address thousands of times and often wonder where it came from.
Quite a lot are self explanatory but others are shrouded in mystery.I will try to explain the origins in this column.
In Eston there is a road named after a clerk to the local Council in the 1960's.Unfortunately he had Welsh connections so someone in their wisdom decided to call the road MYRRYDIN-BAKER ROAD.Can you imagine the number of letters arriving in this road mispelt (I may have mispelt it myself) but it goes to show these people naming roads do have a responsibility.
I have a friend who is a local historian and she will put me wise on all the streets off Lord Street, so watch this space.I know they are named after family members of a well known family in Redcar.
It would be very difficult to name the roads in alphabetical order without repeating the area because a great many are named after certain areas in the Country but there are also many with stories behind them, which may give you the reader an insight into why they were so called. My grateful thanks must go to Mrs Vera Robinson M.B.E.for kindly allowing me to quote from her book 'Redcar Reviewed' written in 1998 and published by A A Sotheran Ltd of Queen St, Redcar. There are many more roads that have been established since then and we may be able to follow these up later. In the meantime sit back and enjoy a fascinating insight to our history here in Redcar.
So we will start at Warrenby. Many of the older people were born and bred in Warrenby, which was originally called Warrentown because of the abundance of rabbit warrens. Most of the roads were named after wild fowl.

Coney St

Named after a breed of rabbit which had valuable fur.

Decoy St

Named after a method of trapping ducks

Other Streets named after Wildfowl

Snipe,Teal,Widgen,Heron,Plover,Partridge,Wild Duck.

Downey St

This was one of the exceptions because it was named after the company who run Warrenby works and had the Downey and Co furnace.

Todpoint Road.

In 1815 this as well as York Rd was known as Marsh Road but was commonly known as 'Sailors Trod'.When the sailors missed the ship up the river they would walk to catch it before it set sail from Warrenby,so trod became Tod.

Marina Ave

Moving further into the Town Marina Ave was aptly named because it means adjacent to the sea.

Rocket Terr

This housed many of the rocket brigade and their equipment and were the forrunners of the lifeboat crew and saved many lives, sometimes in very difficult circumstances

Harwal Rd

Harold and Walter Cohen were the builders of this road so they split their names so you get HARWAL.
