Old Postcards

Collecting Post Cards has been my pastime for the last ten years and there are a lot of collectors around. There are also dealers, who buy and sell Post Cards.
I go round Collectors Fairs and it always amazes me that people collect Post Cards for the photo on the front, with no message, no postmark and no stamp. My reason for collecting, is because of the sentimental value, the message a person is conveying to a friend or relative. If you visit Charity Shops you can buy them for coppers, compared with the prices asked at Fairs. This section will feature Post Cards from the earliest part of the twentieth Century up to the present day, highlighting the progress in travel overseas.
Everyone has a message for loved ones back home, and with the postmark and stamp, these often make interesting reading.I have tried to place these in chronilogical order but sometimes the postmark is hard to distinquish and if anyone knows of Post Cards earlier than 1903 with message and stamp, please let me know.

1904

This Post Card was posted in Westminster from Nora to Alice at 6.00pm on the 22nd January 1904 and delivered to Victoria Rd Newcastle, Staffordshire complete with a half penny stamp.

1905

This Postcard was posted at 2.15pm from Lancaster on September 12th 1905 to High Bank, Cornforth. The photograph shows the Lancaster Institute.

1905

Here the message is written on the front in beautiful italics from E Hobvey in Brighton to Daniel c/o Monsieur Henry, 29 Rue Combon, Paris France.Posted at 7.45am on September 1st 1905 with two halfpenny stamps
On the front is a hand written message which reads-
Are just getting over the terrible crossing. Many thanks for seeing us off.We are both very sorry to leave you.We very much love getting your messages. Thanks very much.Best Wishes from us.Give our love to Monsieur Giles and Emily.Kindest Regards E Hobvey.

1905

To Bolckow Rd Grangetown from America reads this card from G&A Smith who were staying with Mrs Mate 99 Green St, Jersey City,USA and sent to Miss Florence Smith, 11 Bolckow Rd, Grangetown,County of Yorkshire England postmarked New York City as well as Jersey City, complete with 2 cents stamp on July 10th 1905.The writer addresses Miss Florence Smith as Dear Florrie. The photo shows Grants Tomb, New York and was sprinkled with silver glitter which is still there one hundred year later.Small World.

1907

This card was sent from Harwich during Regatta Week from Grandma to Vera in Rectory Lane Walthamstow at 8.00am on September 17th 1907,complete with half penny stamp.

1908

These cards were very popular to send messages to loved ones and this one is no exception because it was posted in the same town as where the person receiving it lived. It always baffles me as to how a card like this ends up in a Charity Shop in Teesside.
This was from Sallie to brother John in Fairfield Illanois, USA and posted at 1.00pm on the 28th April 1908 complete with a one cent stamp depicting William Franklin.

1913

Some people have very strange tastes when choosing Postcards and then have that much to write there is not enough space,so they cram as much information as possible in such a small area.In this postcard it would appear on the front a somewhat romantic scene but the message suggests that two schoolgirls are discussing Christmas presents and one is into making hats because the other girl is sending pom-poms which perhaps were fashionable at the time to be knitted in.The Card was posted in Evesham at 7.00pm on December 15th 1913 from Ethel to Miss M Dobbin in Gloucester.

1914

The start of World War 1 is depicted in this card and once again the message is crammed but the Bulldog as a symbol of patriotism was popular at the time.Harry Ironmonger was writing to his brother Bill. The frank postage area is not clear but the card was posted at 9.19am on October 31st 1914 and sent to Mr W Ironmonger 44 Pim St South Bank. Cleveland. The Pim St in South Bank is spelt Pym St but I assume the address is the same.If you are a relative let me know.It is a very unusual name. and must take the name after the business they were involved in.

Popular Postcards

This section deals in the trend of the early nineteen hundreds where postcards were sent to loved ones, beit girlfriends or loved ones depicting a series of what we would call glamour photographs of popular starlets of the day.The one above is unusual because it was posted in Ballague in Calcutta India on the 8th February 1907 at 12.28 pm by Stuart R to Miss J Robbins in Kharagpeeo Calcutta bearing a HALF ANNA stamp.India being a British Colony has the face of Edward. The photograph is that of Miss Gabrielle Ray.

Scotish Football Fans

The message on this postcard requests Jean to meet C Mc C at the West End of Princes St Edinburgh at 2.00pm the next day (Saturday)and he will take her to watch Hearts play Celtic at Tynecastle. This was posted with frank marked Fallohouse in 1915 to Miss Jean Mann,4 East St James Street,Edinburgh, complete with half penny stamp. The photograph shows Miss Peggy Kurton.

Same Sender

Here we see another beauty of the time sent again by C McC to Jean to arrange another meeting, this time in Waterloo Place at 6.00pm.This was posted ar 8.00am on 29th October 1915.The name of the starlet is not mentioned.

The Half Anna Stamp

All correspondance from India to Great Britain carried the Half Anna stamp in the early twentieth century.

1904 Again

When collecting Postcards a reliable magnifying glass is needed to determine the year. This Postcard was stored in the section for 1914 but on closer inspection, it was posted to Miss E Robinson of Wood House, St Helens, Bishop Aukland from Les in Trimdon Grange on Tuesday 20th June 1904.The girl in the photo is not named

Spanish Postcard 1925

This card must have been delivered by hand because there in no stamp and no postmark but it was written on 8th July 1925 by Josafina Escalante and sent to Senorita Isabel Loaiza Cuidad. The photo bears no name

Birthday Card 1917

This birthday card in the form of a postcard was sent to Miss E Robinson of Edith Cavell Hostel Gretna Green on 26th September 1917 by Sally. The card is complete with postmark and half penny stamp.
The message on the back dated 26-09-17 is-
Dear Ethel,
Just a card to wish you the best of all wishes for a bright and Happy Birthday.
With Best Love and Kisses from Sally.

On the front is the message-
May Your Birthday Be A Happy One.

Golden Link from the Chain of Love
Is this wish from a heart sincere
Birthday full of Mirth and Song
And a Future Calm and Clear.

1906

As mentioned earlier, when thumbing through the collection, the postmark on this card is difficult to determine but it appears to be 1906.It was sent to Miss Mary Lynch of 212 Cannongate, Edinburgh by her friend Aggie Duncan who was enquiring about her health and hoping she is better. The card is unusual because it is embossed and the figure of St Joan of Arc stands off the page in blue and gold.

Request

I have had a request to try and include the messages on the back if they are legible

From Baltimore to Edinburgh

As I have mentioned earlier when searching through the collection it is possible to miss ones that stand out and reflect what is happening at the time.
One such one was posted in Baltimore USA bearing a two cent stamp on January 11th 1916 at 7.30pm to Miss Margaret Mann of 4 East St James St Edinburgh from her sister Mary and this is what she wrote-
To my dear little sister, wishing you a Happy Birthday and that you may see many more.Fondest Love from sister Mary.
On the front is written as part of the card-
Congratulations
I feel a gladness when I think of thee
That lifts my heart with hope,my life with glee.

1916

A strange card this for a birthday card calling it an anniversary. It was posted on 1st September 1916 from a mother to her daughter and addressed to Miss E Readman 15 Southampton St Redcar.
The message on the back reads----
Sept 1st 1916
From Mother with best love and wishes.
The Poem on the front reads----
For My Daughters Anniversary--
Only a little card my dear,
Only a wish that's true,
Sent for sweet affection sake
Is my birthday wish for you
May every joy that life can hold
may all that's best and bright
Leave around your birthday hours
A web of golden light.
