Looking Back

This section will look back at important events both nationwide and locally. We will start with the end of WW11.So much has happened that I think we will have an interesting journey to the present day.You may say I remember that or do you remember the song from that time.If I miss an important event or one you remember please tell me.E-mail gedffleming@hotmail.com.Headlines such as--
Suez Canal Crisis
Headless body found in the Thames. Is it Buster Crabb.
Savage murder of carpet shop owner in Newport Rd Middlesbrough.
Thousands march through Middlesbrough in the annual Corpus Christi procession.

1945

The War is over and thousands gathered in Trafalgar Square to celebrate.

Letting Their Hair Down

After five long years of anxiety and worry these girls are so relieved they line up for the conga round Trafalger Square

1947 The Royal Wedding

In July of that year Princess Elizebeth became engaged to Royal Navy Lt Philip Mountbatten. On November 20th the whole nation celebrated the wedding.

The Worst Winter

From January till April 1947 Great Britain was in the grip of the worst winter on record.Fifteen foot snowdrifts were common and Teesside was no exception with outlying areas cut off for weeks.Let me know your story. In the towns which relied on horse and cart for delivery of coal or milk this proved impossible because the horses could not keep their feet.Anything that could hold coal was used by householders filling prams and zinc baths pulled along on makeshift sledges or bogies. The ingenuity knew no bounds. In the countryside villages, snowdrift reached roof height and residents had to dig themselves out of the front door.

1948 Gandi Assasinated

Mahatma Gandi was assasinated by a Hindu fanatic Naturam Godse on January 30th 1948

First Jet Airliner Takes to the Sky

The Comet built by De Havilland made it's maiden flight piloted by Group Captain John Cunningham but the excitement was short lived because a series of crashes grounded the aircraft when metal fatigue was found to be the cause. When this was rectified the Comet went into service in 1952 but by then the American Boeing 707 was at the forefront of aviation

1950

The Dalai Lama was ruler of Tibet when the Chinese Communists invaded and he fled into exile. Now in 2008 he is still in exile.A very gentle and peace loving man still yearns to be amongst his people.

1950

George Bernard Shaw (famous playwright and author)dies aged 94.

Korean War begins when North Korea (Communist supported by Russia)invades South Korea (supported by both America and the UN)

Tullund Man-
The extremely well preserved body of a 2500 year old man was found in a peat bog known as Tolland Mose in Denmark. He was wearing a skull cap and appeared to have been hanged. He was found by Professor Glob.Scientists were able to establish that he ate his last meal twelve hours before his death consisting of thin gruel and natural seeds. He had three days stubble on his chin.

1950 Corpus Christi Procession

Many people in Middlesbrough would line the streets to watch the annual Corpus Christi Procession in which the Roman Catholic people from all over the area would take part. From Guisbrough's St Paulinus to South Bank St Peters, from Grangetown St Mary's to St Pats in Middlesbrough they would form up outside the old Cathedral in Sussex St in Middlesbrough and process in their thousands to the Newlands Convent where the Benediction service was held. This was a time when friendships were renewed and folk who had not seen each other for years would come together and promise to keep in touch.Unfortunately because of redevelopment and changing attitudes it was felt inappropriate to carry on the processions so these were suspended. In recent times these have been reastablished but on a smaller scale but many children would have experienced this show of faith in the forties and fifties. The photo shows the men and Clergy from St Peters South Bank. Thanks to Dick Fawcett (site builder of the Slaggy Island Site.)
