The Worst Winter
From January till April 1947 Great Britain was in the grip of the worst winter on record.Fifteen foot snowdrifts were common and Teesside was no exception with outlying areas cut off for weeks.Let me know your story. In the towns which relied on horse and cart for delivery of coal or milk this proved impossible because the horses could not keep their feet.Anything that could hold coal was used by householders filling prams and zinc baths pulled along on makeshift sledges or bogies. The ingenuity knew no bounds. In the countryside villages, snowdrift reached roof height and residents had to dig themselves out of the front door. |

1950 Corpus Christi Procession
 | | Many people in Middlesbrough would line the streets to watch the annual Corpus Christi Procession in which the Roman Catholic people from all over the area would take part. From Guisbrough's St Paulinus to South Bank St Peters, from Grangetown St Mary's to St Pats in Middlesbrough they would form up outside the old Cathedral in Sussex St in Middlesbrough and process in their thousands to the Newlands Convent where the Benediction service was held. This was a time when friendships were renewed and folk who had not seen each other for years would come together and promise to keep in touch.Unfortunately because of redevelopment and changing attitudes it was felt inappropriate to carry on the processions so these were suspended. In recent times these have been reastablished but on a smaller scale but many children would have experienced this show of faith in the forties and fifties. The photo shows the men and Clergy from St Peters South Bank. Thanks to Dick Fawcett (site builder of the Slaggy Island Site.) |
