Vilma Collins

St Alban's parishioners were very proud to have the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Council as a member of their congregation.Mrs Vilma Collins was Mayor of the Council during 2001-2002. Fr Bill Ryan was very proud and honoured to act as her Chaplain during her year of office. Her Mayoral Sunday held in St Albans was a chance for the parishioners to welcome Vilma not only as a fellow member but also as First Lady. The day started with a formal civic procession including the Mace Bearer and Civic guests from the school to the Church. Bishop John Crawley welcomed everyone and concelebrated Mass assisted by Fr Bill Ryan and Canon Louis Collinwood.Special guests included our MP Mrs Vera Baird MP.QC and Civic leaders from around the area. Cleveland Police was represented and family and friends enjoyed the occasion. Bishop Crawley in his Homily expressed the feeling of pride felt by St Albans in welcoming such distinquished guests to their little Church. He wished Vilma every good wish in the coming year of her office and also wished Fr Ryan good luck in his Chaplaincy. Among the guests was George Hardwick, a stalwart of Middlesbrough Football Club and England both as a player and Manager. The whole event was videoed and a copy is now a reminder of that memorial day. A reception in the school hall, brought the civic leaders and parishioners together, in a social atmosphere and so ended a perfect day for Vilma and St Albans

School Visit

During her year in office Vilma visited St Albans School to explain the role of Mayor and what it means to be the First Citizen. She explained that if Royalty paid a visit, she would be the first to welcome them. She also explained what the Mace meant and her role in full Council Meetings. The children were fascinated by her Mayoral Robes and the Coat of Arms.

Welcome
