"THE PARISH" - Church and Community News

THE PARISH is the monthly magazine published in our benefice as a joint parish and community magazine
For several years Aldbrough and Forcett shared a parish magazine 'PARISH FACES' whilst Melsonby had a village news letter, 'Melsonby Village News' which included church information relevant to Melsonby provided by PARISH FACES. During 2004 new editors took over both these magazines and expanded the amount of shared material. Eventually it seemed sensible to run a survey to find out what existing and potential readers wanted, and they voted overwhelmingly for one magazine serving all the villages.
The two magazines formally amalgamated using the rather cumbersome name PARISH FACES/Melsonby Village News for several months while they ran a competition to come up with a new name. A vote of readers liked "THE PARISH" Church and Community News and so from May 2005 that is what it has become.
It is still a parish magazine with all the church content that is expected but it is also equally a community magazine containing news and information about non-church events and activities and the people in our villages.
Copies can be obtained from village shops and parish churches in the three parishes it serves.

The magazine also intends to set up its own website in due course and details will be published in the magazine.

THE PARISH is particularly useful if you want details of local businesses as it is their advertisements that provide much of the funding for the magazine.

From January 2008 new subscriptions to the magazine cost only 45p per month or £5 for a year and it can be delivered to your door by one of our band of dedicated volunteer deliverers. We also do a mail subscription at £9 a year to cover post and packing.

If you do not get your own copy of THE PARISH and would like to take out a subscription, then please use the e-mail facility to let us know.

This Month's Cover

Our May cover - like our May Calendar page on this site - features the snow that fell in the villages at Easter and in particular in Eppleby as the main Easter service was at Forcett church. Forcett is a tiny hamlet and the ancient church there serves the larger nearby village of Eppleby where the school is located.
The weather pundits were keen to point out that a white Easter is statistically more common the a white Christmas but it just doesn't sound the same. Further snow during April was a salutory reminder that we need to take great care not to assume too early that the frosts of winter are over for this year.

Rectory Letter - May 2008

Dear Friends,
Throughout my ministry, when preparing couples for marriage, I have told them that during their life together there should be no secrets but there can be surprises. This advice very much came home to roost last month. Firstly, I had no idea about the centre page spread of photographs in April’s edition of The Parish (thanks to Janet for that [Ed: and Kathryn and Amy Haworth]) and then having already enjoyed several surprise events arranged for me by my family, those of you in Aldbrough Village Hall for my 60th birthday party would have been in no doubt when I arrived that this was also a complete surprise. Thank you all very much for your good wishes, the cards and presents. It’s not often I am lost for words, but that night I was.
In the Bible we can read of many surprises, particularly in the stories of Our Lord Jesus’ life and ministry. The word used by the gospel writers is usually translated “amazed”: Those who heard His words, experienced His mighty works and who bore witness to His Resurrection were amazed at the teaching and the actions. Jesus’ ministry was full of surprises – and we must not make a secret of them.
Some people, such as those living in fear of persecution, do have to make a secret of their faith. In our country we do not. So why is it that so many of us are secretive about our faith? Perhaps it is because we are afraid of what surprises God might have in store for us.
Let’s have the courage to be strong in our faith – and be ready for those surprises. We may sometimes be rendered speechless but we should never be lost for the words to give thanks to God for all He has done.

With best wishes,

Stan Haworth
