Forcett Garden fete
 | 10 June began with promising signs as to weather. That meant there was a good chance of a reasonable turnout for the Forcett Garden Fete, an annual event that raises valuable funds for St Cuthbert's church, Forcett.
The event is held in the grounds or Forcett Hall, a magnificent C18 grand house with numerous classic features such as a ha-ha, gardens reputed to have been designed by Capability Brown, a wilderness walk, a lake - but enough of that. It is the garden fete we are interested in |
|
Plant Stall
 | One of the most popular stalls is always the Plant Stall run by Dorothy and Colin Metcalfe though Dorothy does complain that Colin's attitude to plants is that of the farmer, not the gardener. (Which is hardly surprising)
|
|
White Elephant stall
The white elephant stall was run by Annie Wellock. Though the stall seemed somewhat short on albino pachyderms there were plent of other interesting things on sale including a good collection or 'pre-read' books that proved popular with those seeking holiday reading |
Wild Walk
 | | The walk through the 'wilderness' at this time of year when all the rhododendrons are in bloom is always popular. This photo shows just one small example of the blaze of colour there. |
|
Just One Flower
En masse the rhododendens are spectacular. In close up they can be exquisite |
Newton Aycliffe and Brancepeth Silver Band
 | | During the afternoon entertainment was provided by the Newton Aycliffe and Brancepeth Silver Band. The music really added to the atmosphere of the event. |
|
Gender Imbalance
 | As always at English summer garden fetes, teas were served in profusion, raffle tickets sold (they even ran out of tickets), tombolas won and lost. However, as this picture shows, there appeared to be something of a gender imbalance in the attendance.
The fete co-incided with the England - Paraguay match in the World Cup but perish the thought that the gentlemen of the benefice would stay away from Forcett Garden Fete on such a pretext.
Even so the fete made over £2100 for Forcett church and gave everyone there a really enjoyable afternoon out. |
