PARISH CHARITIES

Some years ago the United Parish agreed to support Netsana Zamire through the Tear Fund; the Robert Dent Fund, a Richmond based North Yorkshire charity for deaf children, and if we had any surplus funds at the end of the year, St. James' Mission School in Zimbabwe. We made an excellent start by averaging £1000 per annum for the first few years but, sadly, this has now halved making it impossible to fulfil our promise to Zimbabwe this year,
If you are not at church on a particular Sunday designated a Charities Day, please put your charities donation into one of the special envelopes provided at the back of each church when you are there and either hand it to any church official or put it into the collection plate.
We are committed to the Tear Fund for the next seven years so please make a note of the Charities Days for 2004/5 and note them on your calendar.

News about the charities is published in Parish Faces from time to time and is available on the web-site.

Netsanet - our Ethiopian student

News from Netsanet

Netsanet Zemere is an Ethiopian girl whose education is supported by the charitable collections from the parish. Her parents are both dead and she lives with an aunt whose husband is an accountant and supports Netsanet and her sister and three brothers.
July 2003
Our group of parishes through our charity donations supports Netsanet Zemere in her school in Ethiopia. We have just received her latest letter and here is a translation of what she writes:
Dear Forcett, Aldbrough and Melsonby Parishes,
How are you doing my dear sponsors? I am well. With your great help I got 20Kg of wheat, paraffin oil, soap and shoes. 20Kg of wheat for holidays, pen, pencil, eraser, ruler, bag, uniform and school fees and an annual medical check-up. Thank you very much.
Recently, the Ethiopian football team beat Liberia.
I heard about the war and I do pray for peace. I believe that Jesus is Lord. I am expecting to have your letter, please write to me.
I attend Sunday School and last time we learnt from Luke 1:32.
See you. Bye.

Once every three months our Sunday collections go to support three charities. The next time will be Sunday July 20th. Recently the amounts given have gone down. If you are not going to be in church on July 20th, you can still contribute by using the brown charity envelopes found in each of our churches. It is worthwhile – and as you gather from Netsanet’s letter – very much appreciated

St James'Mission School - August 2003 Report

Our group of parishes supports the work of St James’ Mission School in Zimbabwe. The annual report from the Friends of St James Mission and School is available in Melsonby St James Church. This year the report features the following report on the Library.
Our library is running smoothly as from last year because we get help from different Community and Public Libraries and from different people.
We even get books from these Libraries, especially from Mr R Doust of Bulawayo Public Library. We even sent our Student Librarians to get trained on how school libraries are run. From there the girls come back and help in our own school library. The girls are so effective that even when I am busy in the binding-room they can sign in and out books, they are also able to shelve books in all the sections.
In the main section of the library there are six shelves, three for the fiction and the other three for the non-fiction. The reference section is on its own. In all three sections we have got 9,350 books, and lots of periodicals.
We were still using our furniture catalogue, but very soon we will be using a computer in cataloguing our books. We have the computer right now.
The library is used by both students and members of staff and in the binding-room we bind school books, library books and books for the church. Thus here again we do the covering of both school and library books.
We are also allowed to borrow books from the Bulawayo Public Library and National Free Library especially those books which are not locally found for members of staff.
On behalf of the St James School Library I would like to thank you sincerely for all the support you are giving us.

Robert Dent Memorial Fund for Deaf Children

In 2003 the Stanwick Group of Churches through its Charity Fund, gave £420 to the Robert Dent Fund. In reply we received a letter of thanks and details of a bursary given to Miss Jenny Oldfield, from Knaresborough. a sixth form student with hearing loss who has worn a hearing aid since the age of 5. Jenny had been accepted by the Project Trust to go as a volunteer to work with children in Sri Lanka who also had hearing difficulties.
The Stanwick Group donation was used to provide most of the grant awarded to Jenny by the Fund.

What is the Robert Dent Memorial Fund?

THE ROBERT DENT MEMORIAL FUND FOR DEAF CHILDREN
(RDMF)

Thirteen years ago in May 1991 Mrs. Ella Devlin a Richmond Town councilor, was preparing to be installed as Mayor of Richmond. At the same time, on 18 May, a courageous young man from Wensleydale, ROBERT DENT, died tragically of a brain haemorrhage.

Mrs. Devlin had known Robert and his family for a number of years having been involved in voluntary work with Deaf Agencies in the area. She was a founder member of the Richmond & Catterick branch of the National Deaf Children's in 1974 (now Richmond & Northallerton) which is still very active . The Dent Family were some of the first members as Robert was profoundly deaf.

After attending SFX and Richmond Schools and York Technical College, Robert went on to gain an Upper Second Class Degree in Quantity Surveying despite his Profound hearing Loss and having to undergo major heart surgery during his final year. He was working for Hartlepool Council when he died suddenly

Robert's untimely death made Mrs Devlin set about founding some sort of fund to assist other deaf young people in the region, who showed similar courage as Robert to fulfill their potential. .
So THE ROBERT DENT MEMORIAL FUND FOR DEAF CHILDREN was launched at Robert's Memorial Service as Mrs. Devlin's Charity for her Mayoral Year.

TWENTY THOUSAND POUNDS was raised in that Civic Year Six Thousand Pounds, alone, was raised with a Charity Auction by Donna Ashton a friend of Robert's presided over by Mr Rodney Tennant.

The generosity of the Dale's people that night was incredible but also throughout that year the Army, the RAF Regiment and so many other donors contributed to a flying start.

Now thirteen years on with the further help of two legacies administered by Messrs Scott solicitors and Hunton & Garget, continued support from the Stanwick Group of Churches and other groups and individuals we have been in the position to help many deaf young people by way of Bursary Awards, to develop their potential and have a degree of independence.

To date the sum of £40,000 has been distributed in bursary awards.

The Fund is a Registered Charity (No. 1014478) administered by a team of Trustees and the only costs applied are reimbursed necessary running costs, e.g. postage, printing and stationery.
So, the Robert Dent Memorial Fund is still alive and active, as the memory of a wonderfully brave young man.

Coffee Morning

At our Coffee Morning on 6 November 2004 we made £400 in aid of the Stanwick Group charities fund.

We are very grateful to all those who gave contributions or made items for our stalls, to those who came on the day to help out, to those who came and spent money and to those who were unable to come but gave donations instead.
