The Choir
The choir serves the whole Stanwick Group so sings only for one service at one of the parish churches each Sunday. This follows a rota so that the 3 churches get fair shares of Mattins, Evensong or Sung Eucharist. Occasionally, for a special service, the choir may sing at one of the chapels, or on major feasts they will sing at 2 services.
The choir currently has no permanent choirmaster/organist following the retirement and subsequent death of Sam Herdman, who had held the position for about 40 years.
For special occasions the choir is often rehearsed in an anthem or part of the sung service by Michael Moran. Unfortunately Michael's other commitments prevent him from taking on the task full time but all congregations, and the choir members. are grateful for the help he gives.
Rehearsals are arranged on an ad hoc basis depending upon the amount of rehearsal time needed and the schedules of the various choir members. Some expereinced singers who are still in employment are even able to manage without attending rehearsals.
There is a shortage of male voices (a common problem with choirs) so if you are a tenor or bass and would like to sing in a small church choir - even if only occasionally, say for the major festivals - you would be most welcome.
The choir enjoys singing anthems and rehearsing the occasional secular piece but is inhibited in performance by its small size and range of voices available. |
The Choir at Christmas
There is lots of beautiful, but not very difficult, Christmas music that the choir would love to perform, but it is inhibited by its small numbers. There may, however, be people in the parish who sing in choral societies or who have sung with choirs in the past but do not have the time to be able to join the Stanwick Group of Churches choir on a permanent basis; some of them may be willing to sing with our choir for one or more of the Christmas services.
If you would be willing to sing with us temporarily please contact us by the email link with a phone number and we'll try to call you back. If you are an experienced singer you may be able to borrow the music to read through at home;also we are happy to try to schedule rehearsals to a convenient time.
