village happenings
Welcome to the beautiful village of startforth, south of Barnard Castle ,lying on the south bank of the river Tees, adjacent to Barnard Castle you will find the tranquil village that has three separate parts to it, from north to south there is Low Startforth leading to High Startforth and to the other side of the A67 there is Startforth Park.
Its geographical history put it in North Yorkshire until the major boundary changes took place in the 60s, it is now part of County Durham.
It was host to a army camp until the late 60s and early 70s when the Prison service developed it into a Young Offenders Institute.
The village has a mixture of old and new proprties, both private and rented, it has its own primary school, that has a very good reputation with the capacity of 150+ children, currently running well below that figure. There is Holy Trinity church that serves the needs of most of the Parish, it is linked with the mission at Boldron and other churches at Rokeby and Brignall and Bowes.
There is a pub in the village called the Royal Star, holding the normal pub activities such as darts, pool, and quoits.
Unfortunately the village does not have a communal hall as such therefore the school doubles as the community centre, run by the Community Association.
We have various organisations that look after the needs of the community such as:- Startforth Morritt community association
Holy Trinity Church
Startforth Morritt Memorial Primary school
Startforth Parish council
neighbourhood watch
Startforth Park Residents Association
Each of these activities are village based, and are basically run from the village school that acts as the community centre and is where most meetings are held. |
