Daily Prayers from St. James Church
Here are some simple prayers that you can use throughout the day.
If you are praying with other people or on your own, remember that your prayers are a part of all the prayers offered up to God each day, every day, without pause all over the world.
That is why the prayers in this selection say we and our, as well as I and my.
We are never praying alone.

Morning Prayers
The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever: Amen.
As the sun was rising, Jesus stood at the water’s
edge...The disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” (John 21:4, 7)
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me.
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
(St. Patrick)
This is the day that the Lord has made.
let us rejoice and be glad in it. |
Midday Prayers
We adore you most holy Lord Jesus Christ
and we bless you
because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
Lord Jesus Christ
Son of God
Have mercy on me.
O come to my heart Lord Jesus
There is room in my heart for thee.
Lord Jesus, Saviour of the world,
this is the hour when
you were lifted up from the earth.
By looking on your cross
and seeing the depth of your love for us,
may we never again stray from you,
who reign with the Father for ever and ever. Amen.
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God. |
Evening Prayers
Let my prayer rise before you as incense,
the lifting up of my hands
as the evening sacrifice. (Psalm 141)
Almighty God, you have made us for yourself,
and our hearts are restless
until they find their rest in you.
Grant us purity of heart and strength of purpose
that in your service
we may find our perfect freedom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
(St. Augustine of Hippo)
Bless all who worship you, almighty God,
from the rising of the sun to its setting,
from your goodness enrich us,
by your love inspire us,
by your Spirit guide us,
by your power protect us,
in your mercy receive us,
now and always. Amen.
May your peace and blessing
rest upon all the people we
have met and all the places we have been this day.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
be with us all evermore. Amen.

Night Prayer
You, O Lord, are in the midst of us
and we are called by your name;
leave us not, O Lord our God. (Jeremiah 14:9)
Lighten our darkness, Lord, we pray;
and in your mercy defend us
from all perils and dangers
of this night;
for the love of your only Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
In peace, we will lie down and sleep;
For you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.
Abide with us, Lord Jesus,
For the night is at hand and the day is now past.
As the night-watch looks for the morning,
So do we look for you, O Christ.
May God’s love surround us,
God’s joy fill our lives,
God’s peace be in our hearts,
and God’s blessing be with us
this night and always.
Amen. |
Collect Prayer for St. James
Merciful God,
whose apostle Saint James,
leaving his father and all that he had,
was obedient to the calling
of your Son Jesus Christ
and followed him even to death:
help us, forsaking the false
attractions of the world,
to be ready at all times
to answer your call without delay;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A Blessing
On our heads and on our homes,
the blessing of God.
In our coming and going,
the peace of God.
In our life and believing,
the love of God.
At our end and new beginning
the arms of God to welcome us
and bring us home.
Amen. |
