Parish of St. John, Castleside
Christians seek to act upon the two great commandments of Jesus Christ:
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength."
and, "Love your neighbour as yourself."
At St. John's we give expression to our faith in the worship of God, by our service of others, and through a desire to make welcome real within this community.
Explore this site to find information about St. John's and matters of wider interest. We aim to keep it up-to-date, and to add to it on a regular basis.

Our church is dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, one of the four Gospel writers.

New Priest at St. John's
The Revd. Martin Jackson, Vicar of St. Cuthbert's, Benfieldside, was licensed by the Bishop of Jarrow also to be Priest-in-Charge of Castleside on Sunday 11th September.
Following the Licensing new service times will be necessary to enable ministry in both parishes to go on: Sunday services as above, and the Wednesday Eucharist moves to 10a.m.

A bit of history
 | Castleside is located to the west of Consett in County Durham and just south of the border with Northumberland. Newcastle is 16 miles to the north-east, Hexham 15 miles to the north-west, Darlington 25 miles to the south, and the lovely North Pennines and the Derwent Valley to the West.
St. John's Church itself sits at the A68 crossroads in the village of Castleside with the very welcoming watering hole 'The Smelters Arms' on the opposite corner. A break here in your journey and a visit to both, will refresh you in Body and Soul!
The church built of local stone, was designed by Mr. Ewan Christian of London and is a reproduction of a church he had seen and admired while on holiday in Switzerland. It is a small church, holding at a squeeze, about 130 people and has a peaceful and welcoming feel about it.
St .John's was consecrated by the Right Reverend Dr. Charles Baring, Bishop of Durham on 7th March 1867. The bishop had problems getting home that day due to heavy snow and after getting stuck at High Stoop, had to complete his journey on a snow plough! The first vicar of St. John the Evangelist, Castleside was the Rev. Wesley Farrar M.A. who had at one time been a curate at the nearby parish of Lanchester and had had the responsibility of looking after Castleside. He was vicar until 1892.
