Access to Parish Records
The preservation and accessibility of parish records is regulated by the Parochial and Records Measure, 1978.
Older and most non-current registers and other records of the parishes of the Diocese are deposited at the Diocesan Record Office for Parish Records where they are available for consultation in the searchroom. Older and non-current registers of baptisms, marriages and burials are available for consultation on microfilm. Details of the registers held and other enquiries concerning holdings and access should be made to the Diocesan Archivist for Parish records at the County Record Office, County Hall, Durham, DH1 5L. Current registers of baptisms, confirmations, marriages and burials are held by local churches and access to them may be obtained by contacting members of the Clergy of the church in question. A fee may be charged. |
