League Cup Final
Coulby Newham 4 Acklam Steelworks 2 (After extra time)
Coulby Newham picked up their third trophy of the season despite having to twice come from behind against a determined Acklam Steelworks side.
Having already won the league championship this year as well as lifting the Wilf Leader Trophy, Coulby got off to the worst possible start when Steelworks took the lead after just five minutes.
Richie Cook latched on to an inch perfect through ball and the Steelworks striker calmly rounded Graham Turner in the Coulby goal before firing into an empty net.
The goal unsettled the league champions and for much of the next half hour they were second best to the Steelies with Andy Richardson threatening on a number of occasions while Andy Bowman and Lee Bowes also saw efforts go narrowly wide.
Coulby did manage to show a little more composure as the half neared its close with Craig Bishop palming a shot from James Myers just over the bar and Antony Peacock firing just wide of the target.
The start of the second period saw Craig Thomas heading just wide following a corner while Steelworks team mate Bowes also had two good opportunities to double his sides advantage.
Ten minutes in however, Coulby drew level.
Sean Wilkinson timed his run to perfection to latch on to a ball from Martin McManus and he coolly lifted the ball over the advancing keeper.
Coulby’s joy at getting back on level terms was short lived however as just three minutes later, Lee Bowes was brought down in the area and Ben Wheatley made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Apart from a header from Paul Rae, Coulby only rarely posed a real threat and the Steelworks looked to heading for victory.
Five minutes from time however, a mazy run from Peacock ended with the Coulby midfielder being brought down in the area and from the resulting spot kick, Peacock duly fired home the equaliser.
Having found it difficult to get into their stride during normal time, it was a very different Coulby side that emerged for extra time.
Within a minute, only a great save from Bishop stopped Coulby scoring but they took control of the final with two goals in as many minutes.
Johnny Mason broke down the right wing before firing home from a tight angle with Paul Rae making it four when he scrambled the ball home from close range.
Steelies to their credit battled hard to get back into the game but a resilient Coulby rearguard marshalled by man of the match Martin McManus held firm to the final whistle.
After the game, Stokesley League president Brian Hugill presented medals to both side together with mementoes to the match officials Ted Meaburn, John Freeland and Kevin Blackburn

Acklam Steelworks 2 St. Marys College 2007 0
Acklam Steelworks and St. Marys College 2007 brought this season’s league program to a conclusion with the Steelworks taking the honours.
They wasted no time in taking the lead when man of the match Ian Boyle put Craig Thomas in.
Thomas took the ball in his stride before striking a fierce drive from all of twenty five yards out.
Just the single goal separated the sides for over an hour although Lewis Kaid had a good chance to level when he went through one on one with the keeper.
Fifteen minutes from time however, the Steelies doubled their advantage when Boyle once again evaded his markers to release Lewis Reid who outpaced the defence before rounding the keeper.
They might well have won by a larger margin when efforts Boyle and Bowman produced excellent saves from Thomas Straker and Ben Wheatley fired over from close range in the last minute of the game.

Cliff Wells Trophy Final
St. Marys College Old Boys 2 Stokesley 0
St. Marys College Old Boys lifted their first trophy in eight years when they beat a gallant Stokesley side who try as they did, could not find a way through a resolute College rearguard.
There was little to choose between the sides for much of the first half with Luke McLoughlin producing Stokesley’s best effort while Peter Griffin and Arran Thompson spurning good opportunities.
Two minutes from the end of the first half however, Thompson was adjudged to have been brought down in the area and Wally Kaid made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Stokesley started the second half well but ten minutes after the break, they fell further behind when they failed to clear the ball and Dave Aspery rounded the keeper
The College had other chances to make sure of the win but with man of the match John Bennett a driving force in midfield, Stokesley were not giving up without a fight.
They went desperately close on a number of occasions.but keeper Tom McCaddam in the College goal together with the rest of his defence kept a clean sheet to take the trophy.
After the game, Stokesley League president Brian Hugill presented the trophy to College skipper Arran Thompson together with medals to all the players and the match officials Stan Davison, Chris Raistrick and Steve Smith.

League Cup – Semi-Finals
Grangetown YCC 1 Acklam Steelworks 2
Acklam Steelworks made it through to their second final of the season after beating Grangetown YCC thanks to two late penalties.
Earlier, they had struggled to cope with Grangetown’s pressure and had fallen behind when Sam Noteyoung crossed for Kenny Portas to fire into the top corner of the net.
Grangetown really needed to have made more of the following wind in the first half although they should have doubled their advantage in the second period when only a great save from Craig Bishop denied them.
Fifteen minutes from time, a handball in the area resulted in the first of the Steelies penalties which Ben Wheatley duly despatched and five minutes later Wheatley put his second spot kick in the opposite corner after Richie Cook had been brought down in the area.
Coulby Newham 4 The Miners 2
Coulby Newham will be Acklam’s opponents in the final although they were pushed all the way by The Miners who took the lead ojn ten minutes thanks to a well placed header.
Their lead only lasted five minutes however after a run down the wing from James Myers set up Paul Rae for the equaliser.
Myers chipped home on thirty five minutes to put Coulby ahead but The Miners were soon back on level terms following a scramble in the area.
The second half saw the visitors doing their best to regain the lead but it was Coulby who scored next when Antony Peacock beat two men before crashing the ball home from twenty yards out.
Five minutes later, Coulby took control of the tie when Myers found Johnny Mason whose low drive made sure of his sides place in the final at Stokesley on May 7.
Cliff Wells Trophy – Semi-Finals
Bulls Head 2 Stokesley 9
For the second time in six days, Stokesley put nine goals past the Bulls Head this time booking their place in the Cliff Wells Trophy final.
Two first half penalties converted by Lee Lannigan and Kevin Hugill helped them on their way with Steve Macdonald, John Bennett, Brett Humphries and Luke McLoughlin also getting their names on the score sheet before half time.
Adam Hind scored the Bull’s first half goal but further strikes from Hugill and McLoughlin kept Stokesley well on top.
Luke Cox managed a second for the home side but it was Stokesley substitute Manfred Teh who had the last word producing an excellent turn and finish from ten yards.
Stokesley will now meet St. Mary’s College Old Boys after The Smithy failed to get a team out for their semi final.
Midweek League games
St. Marys College 2007 3 Grangetown YCC 1
Two first half goals from Tony Wilson set St. Marys College 2007 on their way to victory the first coming on ten minutes when Paul Smith and Ben Cotts combined to release Ryan Mackey who squared the ball back for Wilson to drive the ball home.
With Rob Allen turning in a man of the match performance at the heart of the College defence, the home side coped well with any threat from Grangetown and they went further ahead on the half hour when midfielder Craig Sillick played a one two with Wilson who finished the move off by sidestepping two defenders and blasting the ball in the roof of the net from twelve yards out.
Grangetown had the better of early possession in the second half but only really produced one chance of note which Thomas Straker managed to push onto the post and they fell further behind when Sillick headed home from ten yards out following a free kick from Lewis Kaid.
Ten minutes from time, Grangetown finally got some reward for their efforts when a twenty yard shot took a deceiving bounce in front of Straker and ended up in the back of the net.
The Smithy 1 Acklam Steelworks 4
Acklam Steelworks made certain of this year’s runners up spot with this win over The Smithy with three first half goals doing the damage.
Lee Bowes opened the scoring on twenty minutes picking up a long ball before cutting in close to the bye line and finding the net from a very acute angle.
Ten minutes later, Richie Cook added a second playing a one two with Steve Barry before running through one on one with the keeper.
The Smithy reduced the arrears from the penalty spot but right on the stroke of half time, Ben Wheatley scrambled the ball home from five yards out following a corner.

Hugill then hit three in the space of fifteen minutes to put the home side well in control at the break.
Soon after the restart, Neil Stephens pulled one back for the Bulls but Hugill was soon on the mark again lobbing home from twenty yards out for his fifth strike.

Stokesley 2 The Miners 6
A hat trick from Simon Milton helped The Miners to victory over Stokesley with Miltons opener coming just five minutes into the game when he lobbed the keeper from twenty yards out.
Stokesley held their lines well for much of the remainder of the half but with virtually the last kick, Milton scrambled the ball home following a corner from Alex Davies.
Lee McQuillen added a third with a thundering shot from twenty five yards out before Milton completed his hat trick following good work from Shaw and McQuillen.
Stokesleys Jimmy Grainge did his best to reduce the arrears with two goals but Davies headed home a cross from Graham Cousans before scoring with a powerful drive from thirty yards out after latching on to a fine through ball from Miners man of the match Liam Martin.
Coulby Newham 3 The Smithy 0
Crowned league champions last week, Coulby Newham completed their league program undefeated after seeing off the challenge of local rivals The Smithy with a three nil win.
They dominated the early stages with James Myers firing against the cross bar and both Sean Wilkinson and Sean Jenkins being denied by the upright.
Twenty five minutes into the game however, they break the deadlock when Anthony Peacock beat two defenders before hitting a curling shot into the top corner of the net.
Darren Hakami produced The Smithys best effort firing just over on the half hour mark and they had a great chance to equalise early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty.
Stand in keeper Scott McCabe however had other ideas and he managed to turn Peter King’s spot kick wide of the post.
Minutes later, James Myers doubled Coulbys advantage when his powerful strike ended up in the net despite hitting The Smithy keeper on its way.
Late in the game Andrew Gove almost pulled one back for The Smithy but it was Richie May who made sure of the points when he beat the offside trap before running through to score.
St Marys College OB 3 Grangetown YCC 2
St. Marys College Old Boys also finished off their league fixtures with yet another victory despite going behind on twenty minutes when they failed to cut out a Grangetown cross.
Shortly before half time however, they got back on level terms when a fierce shot from Peter Griffin crashed against the cross bar before dropping down over the line and Arran Thompson broke away to score ten minutes after the restart.
Thompson scored his second of the game with another solo run to put the College in control and although they let Grangetown in for another goal with ten minutes remaining, some solid defensive work up to the final whistle ensured their success.
The Smithy 4 Stokesley 1
Played Monday, April 14
Mark Toogood opened the scoring for The Smithy heading home a corner from Liam Robson and by half time the home side had doubled it’s advantage when a twenty five yarder from Andrew Gove came back off the cross bar and Liam Bedford was on hand to head home.
Fifteen minutes into the second period, Steve Makin added a third latching on to a long threw ball before chipping hoe from the edge of the area.
Stokesley managed to pull a goal back but shortly before the full time whistle, Makin put Darren Hakami through to make it four.

Stokesley 3 Coulby Newham 6
Coulby Newham are the Stokesley League Champions for 2007 – 8 following their 6-3 win at Stokesley, coming just three days after their success in the Wilf Leader final.
They got off to a flier with James Myers crossing for Richie May to score after just forty seconds and it was May who just minutes later ran through before chipping the Stokesley keeper for his second.
Paul Rae then slid in at the far post for Coulby’s third before Stokesley staged something of a comeback.
Joe Thompson slotted the ball home after Kevin Hugill had chipped the ball over the keeper and Luke McLoughlin fired home fro the penalty spot after he had been brought down in the area.
Shortly before the break however, Paul Rae capitalised on a mix up in the area to restore Coulby’s two goal advantage.
The champions elect kept the pressure on after the restart and were soon rewarded when May broke through to complete his hat trick.
Late in the game, Myers ran through to score with a well judged chip but it was Stokesley that had the last word when Joe Thompson found the back of the net after getting on the end of a cross from McLoughlin.
Acklam Steelworks 4 St Mary’s College OB 1
After lots of endeavour but few chances in a goal less first half, it was the College Old Boys that break the deadlock just two minutes after the restart when Arran Thompson fired home.
Sadly for the College, their advantage was short lived with Ben Wheatley equalising from the edge of the area and with twenty minutes left, Lee Bowes found the back of the net with a flying header.
Substitute John Morrison made it three one before Bowes made sure of the points with his second goal of the game.
St Mary’s College 2007 2 The Smithy 0
Both sides cancelled each other out in the opening stages with a shot from Ryan Mackey that just went wide being the best of the few chances that were created.
Thirty minutes into the game however, Ben Cotts broke down the right, before finding Paul Smith who in turn squared the ball to Tony Wilson who made no mistake from ten yards out.
The College were denied a second shortly after when Mackey headed home only for the goal to be ruled offside.
For much of the second period, The Smithy had the better of the mid field exchanges but rarely made anything of their possession and ten minutes from time they paid the penalty when substitute Adam Brown cut in from the left wing before firing home from twenty yards out..
The Miners 0 Grangetown YCC 1
Just one goal, scored midway through the first half was enough to separate the sides and give Grangetown the three points that lifted them above the Miners in the league table.
Robbie Blake picked up the man of the match for the visitors while centre back and Miner’s skipper
Tony Bradley was top man for the hosts who might well have earned a share of the points in frantic last ten minutes.
