Wilf Leader Trophy Final
Played Wednesday, April 9 at Great Ayton
Coulby Newham 5 St. Mary’s College OB 1
Coulby Newham won their first trophy in the Stokesley League thanks to a devastating spell in the first half when they hit five goals in the space of twelve minutes with James Myers hitting a hat trick.
The College Old Boys defended well for the opening fifteen minutes but once Myers had opened the scoring, following a surging run through their defence, there was no way back for St. Marys.
Minutes later Sean Jenny’s quickly taken free kick to Ricky Woodhouse led to Dean Melville heading home and brilliantly executed chip from the edge of the six yard box brought Myers his second of the night.
Myer’s hat trick came five minutes later when a superbly struck free kick from twenty yards out curled just inside the upright and Wayne Simpson made it five when he beat the offside trap before going through to score.Coulby’s fifth.
To their credit, the Old Boys kept battling away with Arran Thompson heading against the bar in the first half before pulling a goal back just after the restart and although keeper Tom McCaddam helped his side keep a clean sheet in the second half with some fine saves, their was no way back for the College.
Semi-Finals
Coulby Newham 4 Stokesley 1
Despite the difference in current league placing, Stokesley more than held their own in the opening forty five minutes against league leaders Coulby Newham.
They went close on a number of occasions but Coulby also had their chances and thirty minutes inyto the game, Wayne Simpson headed home a free kick from James Myers.
Ten minutes after the break, Coulby doubled their advantage when Simpson was again on hand to head home from a Myer’s corner and they really should have made more of chances that came their way.
Stokesley hit back with fifteen minutes remaining when Luke McGloughlin finished well following a good build up but hopes of taking the game to extra time were dashed minutes later when Simpson and Sean Wilkinson combined to set up Richie May who fired home from close range.
Myers almost made it four when he connected with a cross from Johnny Mason that grazed the cross bar but a minute later the pair combined once again with Myers this time finding the back of the net.
St. Mary's College Old Boys 4 Bulls Head 2
St. Mary's College OB 4 Bull's Head 1
With Stokesley's semi final against Coulby Newham being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, St. Marys College Old Boys will have to wait a little longer to see who they will play in the final of the Wilf Leader Trophy.
The College Old Boys dominated the opening twenty minutes and deservedly went in front when Arran Thompson turned his marker on the half way line before running at goal and slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Midway through the half, Thompson added a second when he got on the end of a centre from Wally Kaid and although the College had three attempts on goal kicked off the line, it was the Bulls Head that scored the only other goal of the half when Chris Hind lobbed the ball home after an assist from Dean Hind.
Any chance of getting back into the game disappeared however when a long ball from Dave Wesson was flicked over the Bulls keeper into the path of Peter Griffin who had the easiest of tap ins from two yards out.
A second goal from Griffin made sure of the Colleges place in the final but it was the Bulls Head who had the last word when Danny Cox was brought down in the area and Dixon made no mistake from the penalty spot. |
