Yorkshire Old Boys Shield – Preliminary Round

St. Bedes 2 St. Marys College 2007 2 AET – St. Bedes go through 3-1 on penalties

Despite dominating their Yorkshire Old Boys Cup tie against St. Bedes for long periods of the game, St. Mary’s failed to turn their possession into goals and ultimately paid the price when they went out on penalties.

Bedes did have the better of the opening exchanges going close when College keeper Thomas Straker was needed to pull off a double save to deny the home side.

Once College got into the game however they gradually took control and deservedly took the lead when Tony Wilson and Mark Crutchley combined to set up Paul Smith for an easy tap in.

With defenders Neil Farwell and Paul Pearson looking comfortable at the back, the College rarely looked troubled and should really have doubled their advantage given the number of chances that went begging.

With just five minutes remaining, St. Bedes drew level following a well worked move to take the game into extra time which St. Marys again seemed to be controlling once Ryan Mackey had restored their lead from the penalty spot after Crutchley had been brought down in the area.

With the College once again well on top and the Bede’s keeper being kept busy denying St. Mary’s a decisive third goal a place in the next round looked to be odds on until two minutes from time when Bedes leveled the scores following a corner.

Unfortunately for the College, the penalty competition turned out to be a very one sided affair with Paul Pearson the only College player to find the back of the net in answer to the three successfully put away by St. Bedes.
