NEW SACKMAKING SESSIONS
 | The New Storysack Making Sessions we set up a few months ago at Maidendale Children's Centre have proved a resounding success.
Participants have enjoyed making several new sacks including, One Warm Fox, The Scarecrow's Hat, The Runaway Rice Cake, The Truth about Hansel and Gretel and The Old Woman and Her Pig. They recently completed the storysack pictured above called 'Frog and The Stranger'. When a stranger arrives, Frog's friends are suspicious. They think that Rat is bound to be theiving and dirty but Frog thinks they may be mistaken and makes friends with Rat. Only when Rat comes to the rescue in a series of emergencies do the others realise they have been too quick to judge him.
One talented volunteer made the story mat from scraps of fabric and felt, while others knitted clothes for the characters, stitched felt lettering onto the sack, recorded the story onto a blank cassette tape and thought up questions and typed up the prompt sheet.
We would love more parents, grandparents and carers to join in. Everybody is welcome so why not come along and enjoy yourself at our informal sessions?
You can also borrow Storysacks directly from the centre to use at home with your own children.
The sessions are on Thursday Afternoons from 12.45 - 2.45pm. No need to book - just turn up.

OWL BABIES FLY HOME!
Have you ever wondered what happens to a Storysack when it has been borrowed so many times that it has become so tatty that it can't be loaned out any more?
One of our most popular Storysacks, 'Owl Babies' had to be withdrawn as it had been used so often it was literally dropping to bits. We asked volunteers from Long Newton Craft Group to help us to repair it as many children were disappointed when they were told it was no longer available to borrow.
When we were told the Owl Babies were ready to collect we were delighted but nothing could prepare us for the lovely suprise the volunteers had in store for us. They hadn't just repaired the sack for us, they had worked tirelessly to repace it with one far superior to the original. As you can see from the photo, they have made a fantastic applique storymat and a huge selection of woodland animals including mice, hedgehogs, a rabbit, a fox and even a porcupine as well as the three owl babies and their mother. Words cannot express how grateful we are to the group for all their hard work. Children in Darlington will be delighted to hear that the 'Owl Babies' are back! | |
