Sir William Turner’s Almshouses provide sheltered accommodation for people of 63 years of age and older, who have an identifiable need and who can maintain an independent life style.
Age: - The age limit is a compromise between the normal retirement age of ladies (60 years) and gentlemen (65 years).
Need: - The identifiable need used to be a financial need. Nowadays, it is more likely to be a ‘social need’. People who feel insecure, isolated or harassed in their present locations or whose housing is inappropriate or inadequate may have identifiable needs.
Life style: - Residents of the Almshouses must be able to live independently. That means they should be able to look after their flats or cottages, cook and care for themselves. Even if they need a little help from family or a part-time carer, they should be able to maintain their personal independence.
Health: - Although the formal title of the Almshouses is Sir William Turner’s Hospital, it has never been a medical institution and there are no medically qualified staff. A person who needs a high level of medical care or has serious restrictions on mobility is unlikely to find the Almshouses to be a suitable place to live.
Accommodation: - There are twenty-five Almshouses, a mixture of ground floor cottages and first floor flats. Most are designed for single people but a small number will comfortably accommodate couples. Each has the following facilities:-
* Support from the Resident Warden
* 24 hour emergency Deputy Warden Service
* Individual central heating
* Remote door latches for security
* Bathroom with mobility grab rails and a shower
* Lounge, bedroom and fitted kitchen
* All stairs have chair-lifts
* Use of the Common Room and gardens
Selection procedure: - The Trustees consider all applicants equally. There is no lower income level that guarantees a place, nor an upper financial limit that excludes an applicant. Each application is taken on its merits.
Waiting list: - There is inevitably a list of people wishing to move to Sir William Turner’s Almshouses. The wait can sometimes be a year or more before an Almshouse, suitable for a particular applicant, becomes available. To enquire about current vacancies or to obtain an application form, write to, telephone or e-mail the Clerk to the Trustees.
