Superintendant's House- "The Cottage"
The Superintendant's House, used as the Tearoom, was refurbished and redecorated over the winter or 2002-2003. A range was restored and fitted in the larger downstairs room. This involved building flues for the oven and a lot of brickwork. Thank you to Mr K Gibbon for his help in this. A hearth also had to be built and tiled.
After all this dirty work, the cottage could be revamped. The wooden floor of the larger room was sanded and varnished and both downstairs tearooms were decorated in period style. An Exhibit room was also created upstairs.Come and visit us to see the finished product. |
Workshop
The workshop, housed in the 1849 beam engine house, was refurbished in time for the summer 2003 open weekend. The motor, line shafting and belting were repaired and for safety reasons, guards were constructed. |
A year in the life of Tees Cottage maintenance: 2004.
2004 saw quite a lot of activity at Tees Cottage, even though much of that included looking after ducks! As well as sprucing up the site, some quite major work was undertaken. Early in 2004 the crown valve and main steam pipe from the boiler were replaced by contractors, funded by Northumbrian Water. In addition, the site was tested for asbestos and was, fortunately, found to be clear.
More general work involved cleaning the settling tanks and constructing an overflow for the Gas Engine's tank. The ceiling in the Gas Engine House was repaired and paint was removed from window catches in the Beam Engine House to reveal the original brass. We also needed to point the chimney base to keep the rain out.
In the Blacksmith's shop, windows were replaced and interior walls painted, and in the Entrance building, the lower part of the walls were whitewashed and carpet laid behind the counter.
In order to allow greater access to facilities for wheelchair users, a ramp was fabricated to allow wheelchair access into the Tearooms.
If anyone has any photos of work being carried out and they would like them included on this website, please get in touch, either via the mail form or see a member of the Lowes family. |
Bathroom
Newly completed for 2005- a BATHROOM, especially for those members who just seem to attract the black stuff. Members can use this only on the condition that they clean up after them!
The bathroom features a bath and sink with cold water on tap, a shower and a heater, brought to you thanks to Andy and Joan Lowes.
There is a diary located in the Beam Engine House for members to record any work they have done and when it was done. |
Northumbrian Water Volunteers 2006
 | | On Monday 16th October, 2006, Tees Cottage members were joined by Northumbrian Water volunteers to clean out the settling tanks. This involved removing silt, which had accumulated in the bottom of the tanks, and foliage from the walls. |
