regularly makes it so much simpler.
Is there anybody out there?

Concerts and Rehearsals

2008

Rehearsals, sometimes twice a week, continued from January through to the Eskdale Festival on April 13th. This was a difficult few months in which to learn and perform six pieces of music, without the use of copies. The choir performed well and, without winning any of the three classes entered, received good marks and favourable comments from the judge.
After a an absence of some fifteen years from Festivals the choir is undoubtedly becoming more attuned to the high standard required for competition singing and feedback from audiences suggests that this is evident in our concert performances.
Festivals are good occasions for meeting other choirs and in many cases for renewing old acquaintances, as in our case with the Felling Choir members. Rivals for many years at Blackpool, Huddersfield and of course Llangollen, we still have friendly connections with Felling members.
Rehearsals have recommenced at Green Lane Primary School each Monday at 7.30pm
Please come along if you fancy a sing, you will be made most welcome.

Annual General Meeting

The Chairman opened the meeting with the customary one minute’s silence for choir bereavements over the past year. Nick Bennett, choir MD for less than a year and Alan Flower a past baritone singer were both remembered.
Thereafter the general theme of the meeting was centred around the critical events of the past traumatic year. Our first entry into competition for some fourteen years (Eskdale Festival) was followed by the sad death of our MD Nick Bennett. Then there was the regretful departure of our accompanist Corinne and her husband Graham and finally the appointment of new MD Alec Jackson and accompanist Martin Dack.
Both Chairman and Secretary expressed their admiration for way the choir, Alec and Martin had come through this tough period. The Annual Concerts, with a slightly different format were very well received with all the extra practice seeming to pay off.
All other concerts were equally well performed and lots of more hard practice followed for the Eskdale Festival. Congratulations were in order.
Stan Watkins, after twenty three years in the treasurer’s seat, gave his last report before handing over to Ian Bedford. He delivered his last, as always, healthy balance sheet and no one can deny that Stan has always presented the AGM with a balance sheet that would have made old Eborneezer proud.
He thanked those who had contributed to the funds throughout the year, in particular Carol Nugent and Ann Pearce for attending all concerts and selling choir CDs and Eric Henderson for organising the weekly draw. He also expressed disappointment at many choir members’ inability to sell tickets for the Annual Concerts. Hopegfully this can improve.
Registrar Dave Pearce presented a comprehensive report on choir members’ attendances at practices and concerts. He concluded that attendances had improved on the previous year and that this could well have been an endorsement of Alec’s work during his short time with the choir.
Tom Vickers, once again, received the Jack Young trophy for being ‘best attender’ at practices and concerts through 2007.
Appointments for the coming year were as follows:
President – Lillian Thompson
Chairman – Dave Carter
Vice Chairman – position vacant
Secretary – Joe Thompson
Assistant Sec. – Roger Piercy
Treasurer – Ian Bedford
Assistant Treasurer – Ian Hanson
Registrar – Dave Pearce
Librarian – Steve Kayley
Committee members from the floor;
Brian Nugent, Terry McCourt, Roly Bruce, Vic Spencer, Ian Bruce.

Carol & Ann

If you ever come to an Apollo concert it's almost certain you will pass Carol Nugent (right above) and Ann Pearce on your way in. They are the ever pleasant ladies who can be found somewhere near the back of the concert venue selling the choir's cassettes and CD's.
It's twenty years since they began selling the choir recordings, either from home or at the choir concerts and you can count on one hand the number of times they have missed a concert in that time. This may have something to do with the fact that their husbands, Dave Pearce and Brian Nugent, are members of the choir.
With both CD's and cassettes sold in many countries around the globe, the choir will always be grateful to the contribution from both ladies and they will always be considered an important part of the choir.
