Get on your bike and ride
There has never been a better time to dust off your old bike and just potter around and see Tees-side.
Perhaps you haven’t ridden for years? Perhaps modern traffic scares you to death?
There are cycle-paths and by-ways all over the area, just waiting for you to explore and take great exercise too.
There a lots of places of interest, some of beauty, some of industrial dereliction which nature is slowly claiming back.
Some routes are easy, some can be a challenge, and you can choose your route to suite your fitness
I started cycling again after a forty five year break.
It has its dangers, I was knocked off my bike by a car in 2002 and very seriously injured. As a way of regaining mobility and fitness again I have taken up local biking. This is not the kind that the super-fit indulge in but it is good enough to set your pulse speeding up a bit and provide good exercise for reluctant muscles.
I would like to share the knowledge of these rides with you, perhaps you will try them yourself - they are all full of interest and great fun.

What bike to ride
Ride what ever you have available
It doesn’t really matter what you ride, as long as it has two wheels and a good set of brakes
You can buy a bike for Twenty Pounds these days from a car boot sale, but be careful its isn’t stolen, perhaps it is beter to buy from a friend or a dealer
A rugged “mountain” type bike is best for exploring but you don’t need anything fancy.
A set of gears is desirable and makes climbing and slow speed work easier. A good puncture repair outfit and a pump are useful, as is a bag and some wet-weather clothing
I have three bikes which I use,
(1)a Raleigh lightweight mountain bike with fifteen speeds and knobbly tyres for the rougher routes.
(2) a lovely old Raleigh Superbe, sit up and beg, for urban riding in areas such as Ingleby Barwick and Yarm
(3) a proper Raleigh “Works Bike”, of the type that were common for carrying plumbers and fitters around in Tees-side industrial sites in the last fifty years.
