Upstream from the Tees Barrage

Ride upstream from the lock at the Tees Barrage, follow the cycleway right past the Durham University buildings and then up the canal to the central basin Turn right at the head of the canal and make your way back to the Tees. The Cook replica can be seen from here. Cross the new footbridge and descend the ramp onto the riverside promendade. Ride, following the river downstream and cross under the Princess Diana bridge, past the boat yards and the rowing boat-house. The track is now unmade but easy, after reaching the Barrage, follow the cycle way Route 1 "Castle Eden" and pass the caravan site. Turn right into Portrack Marsh and double back south towards the river, again unmade but easy. On reaching the riverside path, turn right again and pass through the Whitewater complex recrossing the Barrage by the cycle way.
