General Information
WHO WE ARE
Tees Valley Ceilidhs have been running since January 2005. They were established to provide a regular series of ceilidhs in the Tees valley area, open to the general public, to encourage beginners and more experienced dancers to enjoy an evening’s ceilidh dancing in convivial company. We welcome dancers of all ages. Our youngest dancer was five years old when she first came and we haven’t plucked up the courage to ask the age of our oldest member!!!
Our resident band is Accordance with Dave Turner as resident caller. However we like as much variety of music and dances as possible and have enjoyed excellent evenings with other local bands and their callers including Compass Rose & Ian Appleyard, Endeavour & Ron Marshall, Cleveland Bays & Paul Wesson and Mayflower & Catherine Hyde.
Although the ceilidhs were initially set up with dancing in mind, we like to have a variety of interval entertainment. This gives us all a rest and reminds us that there is more to the folk world than dancing. We have listened in attentive silence to individual singers, sat well back when a complete and very noisy Morris side performed, and have had a wide variety of other entertainments in between. Volunteers are always welcome, so if you would like to entertain us one month please get in touch.
WHERE TO FIND US
We meet at the Fellowship Hall, West Street, Yarm on Tees. The building is a former place of worship which has been converted into a very comfortable and welcoming community hall with a good dance floor and excellent acoustics.
WHEN TO FIND US
Ceilidhs take place between 7.30pm and 10.30pm on the third Friday of every month – except October which is the second Friday (to avoid Yarm Fair!!) and not usually in July and August. For our current programme please see our Diary Page.
Bring your own refreshments (alcohol allowed but we cannot sell it). Entrance £5 for adults and £2 for children.
HOW TO CONTACT US

Big National Ceilidh
The Big National Ceilidh on Saturday 18 October 2008 comprised over 80 ceilidhs around the country - plus three in the US and one in Nigeria! The brainchild of David and Joey Oliver from Hexham, the aim was to hold as many events as possible on the same day to raise a large amount of money for one charity, WaterAid.
Tees Valley Ceilidhs' contribution was a ceilidh at Egglescliffe Community Centre, near Yarm. Three bands played: Darlington-based band Compass Rose opened the evening, followed by the new young folk-rock band String Theory. Accordance, the ceilidh club's resident band, finished off the evening.
There was a dance display by Richmond Castle Cloggers, and songs from Nebula.
At 10 pm there were 76 dancers on the floor for Circassian Circle, and 10 musicians on stage playing 'Jamie Allen'. This was at the request of David & Joey, who estimate that there would have been between 9,500 and 10,000 dancers doing the same dance to the same tune at the same time in the 80+ venues!
The Tees Valley Ceilidhs' dance raised £415 for WaterAid. |
