End of a successful season
REPORT FOR THE TEES WATER SKI SCHOOL
Tees Water Ski Club was approached at the end of 2000 by the new owners of the Tees Barrage, British Waterways asked the club to provide a waterskiing facility. From this Six people from the Club took the Instructor’s Course to gain the necessary qualifications under the instuctions of Peter Walker.
BW granted us a Thursday afternoon slot on the river and for this year we used my boat( We are hoping to receive a grant for a club boat in the future) We started the Ski School on May 2001 thanks to the V Chip Grant from BWS. This was greatly appeciated as this was a new venture and we needed to purchase equipment to enable us to proceed. Training Boom, wetsuits, bouyancy aids, skis, etc.
The School has proved very popular with newcomers to the sport as well as some of our own club members. I have been assisted voluntarily throughout the season by some of our instructors from TWSC and my thanks go out to Jonathan Marsh, Malcolm Buckden,Butch Smith, Phil Plaice,Ian Plaice, and Ian Robson.
One of our main aims was to try to provide skiing for School children in an effort to achieve this I approached Hartlepool Borough Council with the view to offering waterski-ing taster sessions to children as a Summer Sports Scheme. HBC booked 4 days for children and 2 evening sessions for Women in Sport. We also ran a day session for a Scout Group from Middlesbrough.
The Whole season has proved very successul and we have been able to introduce the following to skiing for the first time :-
Children 67
Ladies 14
Men 7
Total 88
We hope to build on this and look forward to a successful 2002.
Regards.
