Megabus to London from Middlesbrough
14th May 2007.
megabus.com, the UK’s leading budget inter-city coach service, has expanded its network to two new English cities.
Customers can now book travel from just £1* to and from Middlesbrough and Sunderland, with the first services scheduled to run on 21 May 2007.
Passengers will be able to travel from both Middlesbrough and Sunderland to Leeds, Sheffield and London, with one service a day operating in each direction.
Brian Souter, Chief Executive of Stagecoach Group, said: “Our exceptional value fares from just £1 have already been extremely popular in the North East of England.
“With no direct rail services to London from either Middlesbrough or Sunderland, we believe we can create a new market for budget inter-city coach travel between these locations.”
Around 2 million passengers a year travel on the megabus.com network in the UK to around 40 locations.
Last year, the megabus.com concept was introduced in the United States where it now covers the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Stagecoach also operates megatrain.com, the Group’s innovative budget rail initiative, which has now attracted more than 200,000 passenger bookings since the service went live in autumn 2005.
Earlier this year, Stagecoach launched the UK’s first integrated budget coach and rail online booking service, allowing customers using megabus.com and megatrain.com to access both coach and rail options in one easy search.
The online retailing system gives visitors to the new consolidated website access to a total of 530 daily departures to around 50 locations across the UK from just £1*.

Stagecoach Driver awarded the MBE
31st December 2007
Stagecoach bus driver David Hands has been made an MBE in the New Year Honours for services to public transport.
David (62), who is based at the company’s depot in Sunderland, has been a driver for Stagecoach for eight years the region. He is known to many Stagecoach passengers for his running commentary to brighten their journey.
During his time as a driver, David has also worked tirelessly for various charities, including the Sunderland Counselling Service and St. Benedict’s Hospice.
Speaking of his MBE, David said: “I was so surprised to receive the award as I was not aware that the company had nominated me. It is a great honour, but I am a little overwhelmed by it all, as I am just an ordinary person doing my job and some voluntary work on the side.
“I am proud of this achievement, though, and would like to thank my family and friends and everyone at Stagecoach for their ongoing support.”
John Conroy, Managing Director of Stagecoach North East, said: “We are delighted that David’s hard work and commitment has been recognised in the New Year Honours.
“As a driver he is dedicated and hard-working and always prepared to go that extra mile for his colleagues and customers alike. His charity and voluntary work is an inspiration to all those who come in contact with him and he is so deserving of his MBE.”

New fleet for Stagecoach in Hartlepool
March 2008-03-19
BUS operator Stagecoach is set to plough £2m into a new fleet of vehicles to serve Hartlepool.
Stagecoach in Hartlepool has ordered 19 new, low floor, Envito 200 single deck vehicles for use in the town.
The new vehicles, which will all have CCTV fitted, are some of the most environmentally friendly buses in production and are also easily accessible for wheelchair users, those with prams and the infirm.
John Conroy, Managing Director of Stagecoach North East said: "Last year we heavily invested in our fleet across Tyne and Wear to improve our overall offering and witnessed a positive response from the public.
This year, Hartlepool is our focus and we hope the £2m investment will significantly improve the travel experience we offer our customers.
"The new vehicles have been carefully selected for their innovative design and efficiency. We are committed to ensuring our services are accessible by all and that they are environmentally sound and these new vehicles meet our objectives exactly."
The new buses are in production and Stagecoach hopes to be able to introduce them to its existing fleet in Spring 2008.
