Welcome
Discover More at the Discovery Centre!
The Discovery Centre in Bishop Auckland has now been open for 10 months, with a whole host of events and exhibitions taking place including; Rag Rugs, Open Art, Roaming with a Roman Guided Walk and Victorian Investigation Workshops.
In June, we had our first Television appearance when Tyne Tees Tonight came and recorded a five-minute slot about the centre and the Meccano exhibition by the North East Meccano Society.
The Canney Hill Pottery Exhibition, which was produced by our volunteers, is our most successful exhibition to date with over 420 visitors. Some of the visitors had travelled from as far afield as Penrith, Newark, York, Nottingham and Stoke-on-Trent as they all have links to the family who ran the pottery some 167 years ago. The exhibition is travelling to Beamish early next year.
We have made strong links with Beamish Open Air Museum, The Bowes Museum and The Weardale Museum and they all provided items of pottery to show at our Canney Hill Pottery Exhibition.
Eleven schools have taken part in a range of education sessions at the centre and 1678 people have visited our various exhibitions. We have some new and exciting exhibitions planned for the centre over the next few months – please see the back page for further details. We have also just installed our new interpretation panels, which focus on local history including The First World Cup, Doggarts and more.
