Canney Hill Pottery Exhibition
Volunteers at the Discovery Centre, Bishop Auckland have put together an exhibition to explore and celebrate the history of the Canney Hill Potteries. This exhibition has been made possible through help of Alan Grace and Cliff Howe who have researched the Pottery for many years. We have also been liasing with Beamish, The Bowes Museum and The Weardale Museum who have kindly loaned us pieces to display at the Exhibition.
We had over 15 pieces thought to be from the pottery at the exhibition kindly loaned by the general public.
The Pottery, located between Canny Hill and Coundon, opened its doors in the mid 1840’s but closed in 1913. Some of the pottery’s most recognisable pieces, featuring the ’Canny Hill Cats’, have appeared on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow.
The Pottery is an important part of the history of the local area yet surprisingly little is known about it.
The exhibition will travel to Beamish some time next year.
