An old building discovers a new life
The Discovery Centre is to be given a new lease of life in an old cycle shop at North Bondgate, Bishop Auckland. The Grace II Listed buliding was in need of some tender loving care as you can see from this photograph. The new centre was launched in February 2007.
We envisage the new Discovery Centre offering local people the opportunity to play an active part in their community.
Our mission is to make everyone proud of their heritage, diversity, cultures, traditions and ways of life!

New Centre
A grade ll listed building has undergone a complete refurbishment to provide a new home for the Bishop Auckland Discovery Centre.
The premises on North Bondgate, Bishop Auckland had been empty for some years and extensive building works were required to bring the building up to today’s standards.
The building was damp, cold, dark and unusable when it was first purchased, now it is a bright and functional space that can be used for exhibitions, events, demonstrations and school workshops.
The centre was given a massive boost by a £45,300 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards restoration aspects of the project, equipment for the centre and running costs. The visitor centre improvements and the day to day running of the centre have also been supported by the Natural England-led Mineral Valleys Project.
