Hi My name is Liz Torley and i am the chairperson of the Friends of Spion Kop Cemetery Group.We are a group of people with an interest in Spion Kop Cemetery,Hartlepool.The official name of the Cemetery is the Borough Cemetery but it is known locally as spion kop,the reason for which is lost in obscurity (if you know why,please e-mail me).I have been out of action for a while but am back on the case now.Spion Kop Cemetery is a local nature reserve on the coast of Hartlepool.It is a dune grassland site with wonderful views and a mixture of wildlife and plant life which are unique to the site.The last activity we had in the cemetery(yes we do have some activities on site) was a Moth night last year which i attended with my freinds daughter Katie aged 8.The night started at around 7pm and Katie did not want to leave at 10pm .She begged to stay as she had had so much fun.Ian Bond from HBC was there aan he brought a special friend with him,a baby pipestrel bat which he was hand rearing at the time.Katie and the other youngsters there were facinated by this.We had lots of lights and special moth traps and caught a lot of different species(all of which were released,of course) and Katie became an instant expert on catching the moths (better than some of the people who attended the event.Well thats all for now.I'll try to keep you all updated on what's happening.Back soon.
