Korea Today

Returning to Korea was to be a memoriable experience. I remember the original journey taking six weeks, now ( 1989 ) 20 hours. We flew over the icefields of Greenland, the frozen wastes of Canada to Anchorage Alaska to refuel and spend two hours in the airport terminal. Then on to Kimpo airport and bus to Seoul. Such a differerence from the devastation I remembered. ( The Flight today takes 12 hours or less )
To be welcomed by the appreciative people of Korea, who were to subsidise our stay in the " Land of the Morning Calm." To be able to visit the Memorials they have erected to those who had given their lives for their homeland. To be able to look into the DMZ and North Korea beyond and visit some of the old battle areas, and the United Nations Cemetery at Pusan. Remembering the last time we were there to say goodbye to the lads we left behind.
For those plots in that far off country of Korea.
Will always be:
" A corner of a foreign field-Forever England"

THE AEGUKGA.

THE WORDS OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA.
Rose of Sharon, thousand miles of range and river land!

Until the East Sea's waves are dry and Mount Baekdu worn away,
God watch over our land forever, our nation eternal!
Like a Mount Namsan armored pine standing on duty still,
Wind or frost, unchanging ever, be our resolute will.
In autumn's arching evening sky, crystal and cloudless blue,
Be the radiant moon our spirit, with such a will, such a spirit, loyalty, heart and hand,
Let us love, come grief, come gladness, this our beloved land!
Rose of Sharon, thousand miles of range and river land!
Let us love, come grief, come gladness, this our beloved land!

OUR COMRADES
"Greater love hath no man than this,
that a man lay down his life for his
friends."
