MUSIC OF NORTHUMBRIA

The title of the music on our intro page, is Pauline Cato playing " Spring the summer long " on the Northumbrian pipes with fiddle and guitar accompaniment. CDs and tapes are available from our link, "GREAT NORTHERN ROADSHOW."
It has always been a contention of mine that we don't make much of our heritage, here in this area, and I am amazed when people in Yorkshire say, "I'm not Northumbrian, I'm Yorkshire." Is not the City of York in Yorkshire? York together with Bamburgh were the capitals of Northumbria, and Northumbria means, north of the Humber. Kingston upon Hull and northwards.
We have a rich heritage here, no less than Scotland, Wales or Ireland, and the Northumbrian Pipes are our pipes.
Northumbria, or north of the Humber, is a good place to live, for me it's the best part of England, so let us start being proud to be Northumbrians.
AM
The music Can be heard on our intro page. It may take 2 or 3 minutes to download.

THE NORTHUMBRIAN LANGUAGE

Geordieland is only a small part of Northumbria mainly on the banks of the Tyne and it is where the Northumbrian Language can still be heard.

This is just a sample, it may serve to enlighten the aliens.
Alien? Not from Northumbria.

Northumbrian Flag

The Northumbrian Flag is probably the oldest known flag design in Britain. The Venerable Bede, Englands first historian, records a banner of purple and gold which hung over the tomb of St Oswald, the 7th century king of Northumbria.

THE NORTHUMBRIAN SMALL PIPES

A Northumbrian piper in traditional dress.

NORTHUMBRIAN HISTORY

Traditionally, Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland were settled by Saxons called Anglians, from Angeln (South West Denmark):
They set up two kingdoms;
Deira was a kingdom in East Yorkshire. The kings lived in York. Their Royal monastery was at Whitby.
Bernicia was a kingdom in Northumberland. The kings lived in Bamburgh. Their Royal monastery was at Lindisfarne,
There was a big war between them. Eventually the Deiran royal family were all killed, and the two kingdoms merged and became Northumbria.
The Kings of Northumbria lived at Yeavering, Bamburgh, York and Doncaster.
Later, the Vikings took many parts of Northumbria especially Yorkshire.

"To be ignorant of what occured before you were born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records." Cicero.
