Brief Job Description
Organisation: Thornaby Light Community Newspaper
Hours: Tuesdays 2-4pm every six weeks, plus at other times as and when decided by the Management Committee.
Location: Thornaby Community Resource Centre (The Five Lamps Centre), Eldon Street, Thornaby.
Purpose: To manage the overall running of the project.
Task: To receive information and attend Management Committee Meetings and sub-groups to manage the overall running of the project.
Skills, experience and personal attributes: No previous experience is necessary, although an interest in the community and Thornaby Light would be beneficial.

Volunteer Reporters

Brief Job Description
Organisation: Thornaby Light Community Newspaper
Hours: Variable:- Daytime, evenings and/or weekends.
Location: Thornaby Community Resource Centre (The Five Lamps Centre), Eldon Street, Thornaby and various locations across Thornaby to undertake the role.
Purpose: To ensure adequate information is obtained to provide suitable coverage within Thornaby Light.
To ensure equality of access to coverage within Thornaby Light by all sections of the community.
Task: To attend local events/initiatives and report on activities by either taking notes or on dictaphone.
To follow up leads by contacting individuals, organisations or businesses and requesting interviews, then conducting interview.
To write up articles and/or work with copywriter to write articles, based on notes taken at event or interview.
Requirements: Attendance at events and interviews may consist of one a week or two a week every couple of weeks, depending on areas of interest, plus time spent writing article up.
Skills, experience and personal attributes: Those with a very shy nature may be advisable to consider other roles first.
An interest in the local community would be desirable, and a good listener.
To be a reporter you must be discreet, neutral, keep your personal opinions to yourself and be able to talk to all sections of the community.

Volunteer Layout Designer

Brief Job Description
Organisation: Thornaby Light Community Newspaper
Hours: Variable:- Daytime, evenings and/or weekends.
Location:Thornaby Community Resource Centre (The Five Lamps Centre), Eldon Street, Thornaby.
Purpose: To ensure the layout of Thornaby Light and publicity literature are produced to a quality standard.
Task: To work in partnership with the graphic designer to ensure the layout of Thornaby Light is of a quality standard, balancing the mix of articles, photographs and adverts.
To work in partnership with the graphic designer to ensure the layout of publicity literature is of a quality standard.
Skills, experience and personal attributes: An interest in computers is necessary.
Experience of Apple Macintosh computers and QuarkXPress and Photoshop packages would be beneficial.
A flair for design and an eye for detail would also be beneficial.

To design publicity literature for Thornaby Light and projects, organisations and businesses.
Skills, experience and personal attributes: An interest in computers is necessary.
Experience of Apple Macintosh computers and QuarkXPress and Photoshop packages would be beneficial.

Volunteer Copy Writer

Brief Job Description
Organisation: Thornaby Light Community Newspaper
Hours: Variable:- Daytime, evenings and/or weekends.
Location:Thornaby Community Resource Centre (The Five Lamps Centre), Eldon Street, Thornaby.
Purpose: To ensure articles are newsworthy/entertaining and neutral, and are not libellous or offensive.
Task: To write articles from notes, dictaphone transcripts or information supplied and liase with reporters to ensure accuracy of detail.
To assist reporters writing their own articles.
To ensure all articles are fair and legal.
Skills, experience and personal attributes: An interest in writing is necessary as is the ability to be neutral and keep your personal opinions to yourself.

Volunteer Proof Reader

Brief Job Description
Organisation: Thornaby Light Community Newspaper
Hours: Variable:- Daytime, evenings and/or weekends.
Location:Thornaby Community Resource Centre (The Five Lamps Centre), Eldon Street, Thornaby.
Purpose: To ensure articles and adverts are suitable to appear in Thornaby Light.
To ensure all literature produced by Thornaby Light is suitable for distribution.
Task: To proof read all articles and adverts and check for spelling, grammar and punctuation. To liase with copywriters, reporters and graphic designers to ensure articles and literature are neutral and are not libellous or offensive.
Skills, experience and personal attributes: An eye for detail and a keen interest in English is necessary.
