NEW RESIDENTS TO THORPE THEWLES
Welcome to Thorpe Thewles I hope your move wasn't too stressful and wish you and your family every happiness in your new home.
I thought I'd let you know a bit about the area, or point you in the direction of those who know quite a lot. As a start you may be interested to read about the history of the village, this can be accessed by clicking onto the Thorpe Thewles History Group link below. It is very interesting and the group recently published a book on the area you can view this by accessing
http://www.thorpe-thewles.org.uk/Publications.htm
The group meets weekly in the Parish Hall and are continuing with their research.
Sadly, following the recent round of Post Office closures, on 1st July 2008 Thorpe Thewles Post Office closed, with permanent closure of the shop on the 4th July. The Post Office and shop will be greatly missed by many local people and its regular customers. It was a focal point for a wide variety community activities/services over the years. Fortunately, the newspaper delivery service will continue from the same premises.
The Hamilton Russell Arms and The Vane Arms public houses located in Thorpe Thewles village, both serve food. Opening times are to standard licensing hours and telephone numbers are (01740) 630757 and (01740) 630458.
Polly (Hamilton Russell) and Gordon (Vane Arms) offer a warm welcome to their customers - you won't go hungry or thirsty in this village.
The Grindon Parish Hall can be found in the village on Durham Road. It has its own kitchen and toilet facilities and is available for hire, for further details please call (01740) 630148. We hold events there too and you are able to see what's on by looking at the calendar on this website.
St James Parish Church - The original church of St Thomas Beckett at Grindon itself is now a ruin, and was replaced by a church at Thorpe Thewles in the middle of the 19th century. The altar stone from the original church is still in the present church of 1886-7 by R J Johnson. It is listed grade II. The parish includes the Wynyard Estate, former home of the Londonderry family, including the beautiful chapel at Wynyard Hall
Our Parish Church Council, along with other parishes in this area, deliver to all residents a monthly Parish News publication. This keeps us informed about activities in and around the Parish. The church has a noticeboard at it's entrance which will also keep you well informed.
Directly opposite the dual carriageway (leaving at the junction just past the Church) is the beautiful Wynyard Woodland Park. There are a variety of activities to keep you interested - from nature walks, kids activities and Planetarium talks. These can be accessed via the "Links for Thorpe Thewles Residents Association" page on this website.
Services and Schools can also be accessed via the above link.
