WHO WE ARE
TRINITY HOUSE SOCIAL CENTRE
Voluntary Organisation / Registered Charity - 520,584/1
Tel/Fax: (0191) 456 4239
Trinity House Social Centre began in 1850 as the parsonage of the Holy Trinity Church in Laygate, South Shields. Located at 134, the building has been used for a wide range of community activities from the 1930’s, eg. a small radio enthusiast’s club eventually became the start of Hospital Radio in South Tyneside.
Trinity House was registered as a charity with the Charity Commission in 1977. South Tyneside MBC became the external trustees, awarding an annual grant towards centre expenditure until 2006 & placing a full time youth & community worker as centre warden.
The centre’s programme covers 5 main areas – Youth Work, Community Development and Adult Education, Health & Fitness and Room Hires. The membership ranges from 1 years old in Parents & Toddlers up to 80 years plus.
Membership & admission fees are cut to the bone. The centre’s prices reflect the very low socio-economic profile with the Rekendyke Ward of South Tyneside where unemployment rates exceed 17%.
Trinity House’s overall ethos is contained in the 1977 Charity Commission document. The object of the charity shall be –
“the provision & maintenance of a community centre for the use of the inhabitants of South Shields without distinction of political, religious or other opinions with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants”.
