Welcome to Tanfield Lea Community Centre
Tanfield Lea and District Community Assoiaciation has occupied the community centre, approximately one mile north of Stanley on the B6173,since its formation in 1963.The centre is next to the Methodist church and is approximately the same distance between Tanfield Lea Comprehensive School and Tanfield Lea Junior School.
The premises which were formerly the Miner's Welfare Hall, are vested in Derwenside District Council as holding trustees. The centre is a two storey building with basement. On the ground floor are the main hall, one large kitchen, and two smaller rooms which are used for various classes and meetings, toilets and a storage room. The first floor is one large room divided into two smaller rooms by a sliding partition, one of which is used as a community art studio, the other as a youth drop in centre.
Area's of benifit are Tanfield Village and the Good Street Estate. The demography of the area is varied. The association has a large pensioner membership which reflects the large number who live near and around the centre. Many of these are former miner's or their dependants. The village has been expanded by the addition of several new housing estates which house many young families.
The village has very few facilities to meet the needs of the large number of teenagers.
The Community Centre is undertaking refurbishment to improve energy efficiency of the building. This comprises the supply, instalation and commissioning of a 25kw Green-tech wood pellet burning boiler, including fuel storage and delivery system, together with new pipework and pumps to connect the new boiler into the existing heating system, zoning the building and also the installation of energy-efficient lighting and double-glazing.This will compliment work already done or on-going including-cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, also installation of a solar air-sourced heat pump which was carried out by NEA and we believe is the first installation of this kind in a community building in the north east. | |
