What happens afterwards?

The baby will be connected to monitors to check his or her heart rate and oxygen leves.
While the baby's intestines recover and start to work, he or she will be fed thorough a tube into the veins. This will gradually be replaced by breast or bottle milk given tjough a naso-gastric tube.
