WELCOME TO ST JOHNS CHAPEL TOWN HALL
The Upper Weardale Town Hall is situated in the village of St Johns Chapel and serves approximately 1500 residents in the 7 villages and 2 hamlets in Upper Weardale, a remote rural area in the North Pennines.
The Town Hall was first built in 1865. In 1898 a Charitable Institution was founded to manage the Hall on behalf of the community and trustees were appointed. The Hall became the focus for social activity within Upper Weardale and many community organisations were represented on the Management Committee.
In 1951 the Hall was gutted by fire, which left only the shell of the building standing. A Restoration Committee was formed and the Hall was rebuilt in 1952 following a massive fund raising campaign.
Today the Hall is still run by a Management Committee representing the residents of the Upper Dale. The Hall is sustained by lettings and organised events, and is available for use by the whole of the Dale.
