TIME FOR CHANGE
The Town Hall in St Johns Chapel, Upper Weardale was originally built in 1865. The building served the local rural community and was the focus for various activities.
Fire gutted the Town Hall in 1951, leaving only the shell standing, however following a massive fund raising campaign, the building was rebuilt and opened in 1952.
The Town Hall is a Charitable Institution and managed by a Management Committee. It is the only large public venue in the Upper Dale, seating 200 and boasts a stage and balcony.
In 1999 a survey of the community revealed that the Town Hall did not fully meet the requirements of the local populace. This prompted the Committee to conduct a Community Consultation and subsequent Feasibility Study, renovation and internal remodelling of the Hall. The resultant scheme has allowed better use of this essentially 1 roomed building, creating up to 4 separate letting areas and providing the following:
Fully fitted stage, accessible to all, with large rear stage room suitable for hosting exhibitions and displays.
D.V.D Cinema
Basement Fitness Suit/Meeting Room/Dressing Rooms
Larger kitchen and serving area
Remodelled balcony, creating more seating
Application was made to The National Lottery Community Fund in June 2001 and the Committee was delighted to announce that a Grant of £300,000 was awarded. This was a substantial contribution towards the overall cost of £550,000 Funding applications went on in order to secure the outstanding balance, this was to be effected by November 2002.The hall was reopened on June 1st 2004 and has prooved all the hard work was worthwhile
The comleted project gave the Upper Dale a large, multi-purpose, accessible venue, suitable for a multitude of activities i-e. shows, concerts, cinema, social and community events, educational and training courses, health and fitness pursuits, touring and local displays and exhibitions and has contributed enormously in the ongoing effort to secure the regeneration of this remote rural area.
