2004 WMA Non-Stadia Championships NZ

Only two north east athletes made the longjourney to Auckland New Zealand.

In the 10k Jim Caddy M75 won the bronze medal in a time of 57.14 and Reg Checkley M65 came away with a silver team medal in a time of 51.19.

The New Zealand Masters had expected an entry of 3000+ but only 448 people entered with the result that expenses were cut to the bone - no free transport from hotels to race venues, etc.
The races themselves were well organised.

This year (2006) the VAANE Pentathlon held on Sunday 3rd September also incorporated the BMAF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. With the weather changing from slight drizzle at the start, to gale force winds in the middle and ending with glorious sunshine and no wind, competitors certainly had their work cut out. Local athlete Paul Donaghy took gold in the M35 category. George Harden took bronze in the M40 category, which was won by Mark Line. Eric Lewis took bronze in the M45 category, which was won by Brian Slaughter. Alan Readman took gold in the M50 category. Jacqui Hodgson took silver in the W35 category, which was won by Amanda Wale and Gill Dobson took gold in the W50 category.

The BMAF Cross-Country Relay Championships 2006 were incorporated into an existing fixture at Farringdon, Sunderland on 16th September. The host club, Sunderland Harriers, won the Veterans M35-M50 category. North Shields Poly finished third. Elswick were second in the Over 50 men's category. Elvet Striders won a medal in the women's relay.

Congratulations to Kath Stewart, John Moore and Sunderland Harriers for winning medals in the BMAF 5k Road Race Championships held at Horwich on Sunday 18th June. John and Kath won silver medals in their age groups. Sunderland were declared as 2nd team on the day behind Herne Hill Harriers both on points and on aggregate time by 2 seconds, but on corrected times which were available later in the day then Sunderland would have won by 9 seconds. Sunderland received their gold medals at the Cross-Country relay race, held at Farringdon on 16th September.

Several local athletes participated at the World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships held in Linz, Austria in March 2006. Kath Stewart and James Caddy were our most successful athletes medal wise. The facilities at Linz were brilliant. Congratulations to all those local athletes who took part.

Congratulations to John Wild (Javelin M50), Don Butler (High Jump M65), Gill Dobson (Javelin W50) and Kath Stewart (400, 800, 1500 W65) for winning gold medals at the BMAF Track and Field Championships held at a windswept Alexander Stadium, Birmingham on 8th and 9th July 2006.
