DURHAM SUNDAY LEAGUE MATCH REPORTS 2006/2007 SEASON

29th OCTOBER 2006

In the NTL League Cup 3rd round Hetton Lyons warmed up for their F.A. Sunday Cup game against Coundon Conservatives with a win over league rivals Houghton Glendale. This is the second time the Durham giants have clashed this season in cup competitions.
Hetton were the stronger side throughout but were made to work hard by an injury depleted Glendale team, in truth the Lyons could’ve been 3-0 up inside fifteen minutes but for the agility of Glendale’s keeper Nicky Lawson. Hetton did take the lead through centre-half Graham Liddle mid-way through the half when he scrambled the ball in at the back post. The second half produced five goals with Stuart Irvine adding to Hetton’s lead soon after the break, but Houghton battled on and scored in the 70th minute, sub Neil Bowman the scorer, the Lyons responded quickly as Brightwell and Lowther made it 4-1 before Bowman doubled his tally for the day at the end.
A first half brace from Anth Morrell and one each from Lee Cosgrove and Danny Murray put Fatfield Albion in the driving seat, although Gilesgate Travelers Rest did pull one back right on half time from Barry Robertson they were never going to trouble the visitors in the second half with both Morrell and Cosgrove completing hat tricks plus goals from Smith and Stephenson making it 9-1.
Houghton Mill All Stars and Sacriston Colliery CC were involved in a pulsating Leedmarque Concepts Staffieri Cup third round tie. Mill took the lead on twenty minutes when a defense splitting pass from Gary Adey set up Steve Fenn to slot home for 1-0. Five minutes into the second half Fenn was upended in the goal area. He took the resulting penalty kick himself and fired the ball into the corner of the net. On seventy minutes Mill’s centre back Andy Adey had a crazy five minute spell that he’ll want to forget. First he inadvertently knocked the ball into his own net whilst attempting a clearance, then a late tackle was awarded with his second yellow card of the match and subsequently his marching orders. Mill’s ten men battled bravely for the final fifteen
minutes and on seventy eight minutes a Steve Fenn shot rebounded to David Hall who coolly knocked in for 3-1. Sacristan’s Rob Draper neatly curled a free kick around the defensive wall to make it 3-2 and set up an exciting last five minutes. But the All Stars hung on and now go through to the quarter finals.
In the Sedgefield derby The Black Lion entertained Premiership side the St Edmunds, a very close game saw the visitors win 3-0 thanks to goals from Steve Flockett and two from Stephen Smith. Meanwhile in the Lasertech Trophy Pelaw Grange Dog Track were 4-0 away winners at Sedgefeild Crosshills.
In Division One Houghton Comrades, visitors to the Washington Arms, found themselves three goals down at the end of the first half. The Arms signal their intention right from the start with a Scott Onions effort hitting the crossbar in the first minute. Playing some of their best football of the season so far The Arms dominate the play and capitalise with three quality team goals superbly finished off by Vinny Moran, Ian Tindle and Craig Smith. The Comrades do much better the second period and during a good spell mid way through the half pull a goal back with a Gary Muncaster strike from the penalty spot, and in the dying moments of the game Arms keeper Graham Atkinson has to make a brave save to maintain the two goal margin. Newton Aycliffe Wmc traveled to Fatfield Biddick and were 7-2 winners thanks to goals from Chris Mason, Andy Ryder(2) and Danny Mellaby (4).
In the Second Division a goal each from Scott Huddleston and Dave Hewson was not enough for the Chicago Rock as they were well beaten 6-2 at Sacriston Wmc. Four goals for Darren Burnam and one from Dave Heslop eased Esh Winning Cricket Club to a 5-1 home win over Chester Plough Inn in the Third Division encounter, John Foster the plough marksman.
In the Fourth Division John Gaunt scored the only goal for East Rainton Travellers Rest as they crashed to a 6-1 home defeat from visitors Belmont Wmc. Quebec Steelers were 4-1 home winners over Bishop Middleham Cross Keys, scorers Steve Clifford (2) and one each from James Smith and Stuart Bayles.

15th OCTOBER 2006

In the NTL League Cup Chilton Wmc of the premier division had to fight all the way through to a penalty shoot out to overcome a lively challenge from first division Washington Arms. In a highly entertaining game Chilton took an early two goal lead with goals from Mason & Davey, Washington Arms grabbed a goal back just before half time with a well worked move finished off superbly by John Wilson. After the break the Arms stormed into a 2-4 lead, thanks to a hat-trick from man of the match Carl(Percy)Robson, but could not hold on as goals from Searby(75th minute) and a tremendous Michael Hodgson volley in the final minute of normal time give Chilton a lifeline. The Arms started the period of extra time with a fine individual effort from Michael Reay to restore their lead but once again fell foul to a last minute equalizer, Chilton substitute Jay Ward doing the damage. With the final score of 5-5 the games outcome was decided by a penalty shoot which Chilton won 5-4. Chester Plough Inn F.C. traveled away to high flying Langley Park Wmc where they started the game brightly but the game sprung into life after forty minutes when the Langley Park Wmc center half upended Darren Henderson in the area and Plough Inn were awarded a penalty which Keith Lines coolly sent the keeper the wrong way. The home keeper Kelvin Ross then pulled off a great save to prevent Plough from increasing the lead. In the second half and with only fifteen minutes to go Langley Park scored an equalizer through Craig Coates and three minutes later took the lead through Andy Morris. The game looked to be slipping away from the Plough until the Langley full back sliced the ball onto his own crossbar and Plough's Jamie Seymour was there to head the rebound home forcing the game into extra time. Langley Park Wmc proved to strong for the third division team in extra time and scored two quick goals, Greg Chapman and Dan O’Brien on the either side of the half to secure their win.
Houghton Mill All Stars progressed to the second round of the Durham City Supporters Association Guards Cup with a fine 7-2 win over Biddick Inn. Mill took the lead in the first minute when Steve Fenn slotted the ball around Biddick 'keeper David Smith after some fine work from David Hall. Alistair Dodds and a further Steve Fenn goal made it 3-0 at the break. A Rob Walker header put Mill four up before Biddick's Lee Baxter reduced the deficit. Simon Doran for Mill and Simon Grainey for Biddick extended the score to 5-2. Nick Thompson and a third Steve Fenn goal gave Mill a 7-2 lead. In the 85th minute Biddick had Anthony Myers sent off for two bookable
offences.
In the leagues Premier Divison Fatfield Albion entertained Houghton Glendale Social, an early own goal saw Fatfield one up in a first half that they totally dominated. Two goals from Anthony Smith made it three nil at the break. The Glendale came out strong in the second half and pulled one back through sub Graeme Hutchinson but to no avail as Fatfield finished 3-1 winners.
