Westbrook 's New Victorian Lights

Old Lamps for New

New Victorian style lamps have now been installed in Westbrook Villas

Westbrook Villas, a street steeped in Darlington’s Victorian heritage has had its modern street lamps replaced with Victorian replicas more in keeping with the streets Victorian architecture, helping to restore the street to its original appearance and atmosphere.

This has been achieved by a grant of £7000 from the Fair Share Trust of the County Durham Community Foundation which provides support to local communities.

The lights were unveiled by Chris Lloyd, deputy editor of the Northern Echo and well known local historian.

To celebrate the grant and the lights, residents also took part in the 2011 national Heritage Open Days by providing a guided walk highlighting the streets architecture and social history over the last 160 years.

For the guided walk participants met at 2 pm on Sunday 11 September at Housams on the corner of Westbrook and High Northgate. A total of 60 people attended the walk. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks were available.

Of particularly popular interest was a display of photographs of the interiors of some of the houses.

The Original Lamps

This is one of the original lamps which were removed in the 1950s. It was a gas lamp opposite 12 Westbrook Villas, on the road at the top of the gardens. The electric lamps which replaced the gas lamps at the top half of the street were in the same location but on the opposite side of the road, on the paths.

Last of the 1950s Lamps

This is one of the 1950s lamps which were replaced by the Victorian repilca in July 2011.
