BridlePaths and Footpaths around Whashton
 | There are a number of Public Rights of Way around Whashton which afford plenty of opportunities to explore the charms of the local countryside and take exercise. Please note that a number of these run next to or across farmland, and walkers should follow the line of the paths and observe the Country Code.
The following is a brief description of each.
No1.
Signpost at Grid Reference 155045. This Bridleway starts from the Richmond to Ravensworth road at the top of Gilling Wood Bank. Go through the filed gate and follow the bridlepath over Aske Moor towards the Richmond to Marske road. Near the signpost is the 'Plague Stone' where money was reputed to be deposited in vinegear in the holow of the stone in payment for goods by residents of Richmond during the time of the great plague.
No 2.
Signpost at Grid Reference 151050. This Bridleway starts from the Richmond to Ravensworth road at the bottom of Gilling Wood Bank opposite Whashton Springs farm entrance and leads through Gilling Wood. This wood is renowned for its bluebells in the spring.
No 3.
Signpost at Grid Reference 136051. This footpath starts from Sturdy Road next to Sturdy House farm, and runs across the field towards the woods and thence to Kirkby Hill. Note that this footpath runs across part of the MoD Feldom Training Area and warning signs should be observed where appropriate. The path is however clearly marked throughout. Excellent views of Teeside from the high ground above Kirkby Hill.
No 4.
Signpost at Grid Reference 135045. This Bridleway starts from Sturdy Road at the entrance to Green Lane Farm and runs over Richmond Out Moor to the town.
No 5.
Signpost at Grid Reference 147061. This Bridleway starts at the top of next to Hill House on the Richmond to Ravensworth road. This leads down the side of Whashton Wastes, an area of common land south of the village to the road leading in to the village.
No 6.
Signpost at Grid Reference 147061.This Footpath starts opposite the above Bridleway and leads alongside farmland to Kirkby Hill.
No 7.
Signpost at Grid Reference 148062. This is the entrance to the Bridlepath No 5 at the entrance to the village.
No 8.
Signpost at Grid Reference 151062. This Footpath starts from the road running alongside the village green and leads down the lane between Whashton Lodge and Spring Cottage. It passes across the front of Moss Cottage and down to Whashton Bridge across Hartforth Beck.
No 9.
Signpost at Grid Reference 152062. This Footpath starts from the road alongside the village green next to Box Hedge Cottage and joins the Footpath No 8 to lead to Whashton Bridge.
No 10.
Signpost at Grid Reference 155058. This Bridleway starts from Whashton Hag Farm lane and follows the line of Leadmill Lane towards Crabtree House.
No 11.
Signpost at Grid Reference 155067. This Footpath starts from Comfort Lane near to Whashton Bridge and follows along the side of Hartforth Beck towards Hartforth Village.
No 12.
Signpost at Grid Reference 155067. This Footpath starts opposite Footpath No 11 and also follows Harthforth Beck, but towards Ravensworth. |
