THE WESLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY NE ENGLAND BRANCH

The Wesley Historical Society was founded in 1893 "to promote the study of the history and literature of early Methodism"

The North East of England branch of the WHS was founded in 1962 to provide a forum for those interested in Methodist history in a more regional setting. Other local branches serve most parts of the British Isles in a similar way.

The Branch aims to encourage an informed interest in the life and work of John and Charles Wesley, in Methodist history in general, in chapels and their architecture, and in the broader patterns of English religious history, especially in the counties of Northumberland, Durham and Cleveland.

Spring and Autumn lectures are held each year in various venues throughout the north east, and there is an outing in the summer months. Non-members are welcome.

A substantial Bulletin (free to members) is published each March and October, containing articles, information, book reviews and reports on Branch activities. Non members may obtain copies, priced £2 including postage, on request.

The Branch holds a considerable collection of books and pamphlets relating to the history of Methodism nationally and locally. It is based in the Lit. & Phil. Society's Library, Newcastle. Access to the collection is free to members and other researchers. Contact the Librarian on 0191 232 0192.
