The Travelling Preacher by Geoffrey Milburn
"Sunday 30 May: At seven in the morning I walked down to Sandgate . . . and standing at the end of the street with John Taylor, began to sing the hundredth psalm. Three or four people came out to see what was the matter, who soon increased to four or five hundred . . ."
So begins John Wesley's account of his first day's preaching in Newcastle, at the start of his preaching tours in North East England. Originally broadcast by BBC Radio Newcastle, the intention of The Travelling Preacher is to allow John Wesley, with his brother Charles and other early Methodists, to speak for themselves by using extracts from their own journals. The book provides a unique picture of the development of Methodism in the area.

Timothy Hackworth 1786-1850 by Geoffrey E. Milburn
'He was a man of ingeneous and active mind: kind and liberal in his disposition; plain and unassuming in his manner; cheerful and edifying in his converastion; of deep and fervent piety and untiring in his endeavours to promote the well-being of his fellow creatures'
Generous words. But in justice to Timothy Hackworth we have to add that it was he who kept the wheels turning on the Stockton to Darlington Railway in the crucial early years, and that he designed some fine locomotives. Through often overlooked, he certainly deserved a niche in the gallery of the great railway engineers.
And he was a Methodist !
