Young Persons Rights
Q1 I am 15, and I have been asked to babysit. Is
it legal?
Al If they are responsible, a young person can
babysit at any age, whether paid or not. There
is no legal restriction on the age of the
child being looked after. However, if the
child is thought to be at risk; because they
are inadequately supervised, criminal
proceedings could be taken against the parent.
Q2 I want to have some body piercing/a tattoo. Do
I have to be 18 years old?.
A2 There are no legal restrictions on the age at
which you can have body parts pierced.
However, some establishments may operate their
own informal guidelines on obtaining parental
consent.
It is an offence to tattoo a young person
unless it is performed for medical reasons by
a qualified medical practitioner. Someone who
tattoos anyone under 18 could be prosecuted.
