West Middlesbrough YIP is one of seventy projects that make up the government's youth inclusion programme.
Middlesbrough YIP is supported and funded by the Youth Justice Board, West Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Trust, South Tees Youth Offending Service and the European Social Fund. The project is managed through Safe in Tees Valley which is a community safety and crime reduction partnership.
YIP staff work with young people aged 8-16 who are most in need of support and live in the West Lane, Whinney Banks, Newport and Cannon Park areas of Middlesbrough. The project aims to prevent young people from becoming involved in negative (anti-social) behaviour.
YIP offers youngsters the oppotunity to take part in art and drama, sailing trips, after school clubs, junior 'good grub'clubs and youth forums. The project also takes young people away on residential trips and has its own fishing club. During school holidays, the project runs a daily programme of activities including
+ Water sports
+ Go-Karting
+ Horse Riding
+ Quads
+ Winkling
+ Bowling
+ Mountain Biking
+ Outdoor Rock Climbing
+ Surfing
In addition, the YIP has developed an accredited alternative education programme that is delivered to young people who are either not engaged in mainstream education, or are not achieving their full potential. By working with primary and secondary schools in the neighbourhood the project aims to raise aspirations, improve achievements and build the confidence of young people.
